ABINGTON, PA – Penn State Abington outscored visiting Penn College of Technology, 17-8, in the fourth quarter and that proved to be the difference in the Nittany Lions' 69-60, United Conference triumph.
The win was the second straight for Penn State Abington as it improved to 3-7 overall and a perfect 2-0 in conference action. The Wildcats saw their record fall to 2-9 and 1-3.
The game saw six ties and four lead changes. It was deadlocked at 52 heading into the final quarter and became tied again at 56-56 after Penn's Maci Ilgen scored with 6:48 remaining. It was all Nittany Lions from there as
Cassie Tavormina hit a jumper while
Safara McIntyre and
Wynter Bess followed with back-to-back layups for a 6-0 run.
The Wildcats pulled to within four, 62-58, but Bess answered with a huge 3-pointer and it ignited a 7-2 run to end the game. Penn State Abington hit six of its 11 shots from the field (54.6%) in the fourth quarter and it held Penn College to just 28.6 percent shooting (4-for-14).
Bess finished with a game-high 23 points while reigning United East Player of the Week
Angela Sanders added 20 points and nine boards. Tavormina had 13 points and
Camille Fleming chipped in with six points and nine rebounds. Kayleigh Miller came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 15 points.
The Nittany Lions will look to remain perfect in conference play when they travel to Penn State Berks on Friday, January 14.
