Sanders' Heroics Leads Nittany Lions To Last-Second Win

Sophomore Angela Sanders notched career highs of 35 points and 19 rebounds and scored the game-winning basket with just 0.7 seconds remaining to lift Penn State Abington to a 74-72 home victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland.

The win improved the Nittany Lions to 2-7 overall and, more importantly, 1-0 in United East Conference action. The Seahawks fell to 4-6 and 2-1.

Sanders' scoring and rebounding totals were the fourth highest for a single game in Penn State Abington history and she is the first player to record 35-plus points and 17-plus rebounds in a contest. She was 13-for-19 from the field (tied for fourth most field goals made in a game), including 4-for-5 from 3-point land, and 5-for-9 from the free throw line. Ten of Sanders' rebounds were on the offensive end and she also added three assists and three steals in 39 minutes of action.

It was Sanders' 13th field goal that was the difference and she drove down the length of the court and hit a layup with less than a second remaining. Less than 10 seconds earlier, Sanders had a layup that gave the Nittany Lions a 72-70 lead. However, Cassidy Kupchinskas answered with a pair of free throws for St. Mary's before Sander's last-second heroics. The Seahawks could not get a shot off before the buzzer and Penn State Abington celebrated the win.

The Nittany Lions trailed by as many 16 in the game and were still down by nine points heading into the final quarter. They were behind by 10 near the midway point of the fourth, but rallied back thanks to eight straight from Wynter Bess on a pair of three-pointers and a jumper. The Seahawks bumped it back to a five before a trey and a layup by Cassie Tavormina tied it up. It was back and forth the rest of the way.

The Nittany Lions played near-perfect basketball to close the game, shooting 68 percent from the field in the fourth while St. Mary's made just 21 percent of its field goals. Tavormina and Bess had 17 and 12 points respectively for Penn State Abington while Camille Fleming notched eight points and eight boards. Kupchinskas led the Seahawks with 29 points while Stephanie Howell pulled in 15 rebounds.

The Nittany Lions are back in action at home on Tuesday, January 11 against Penn College in a United East match-up.
