Abington Falls to DelVal, 3-1

Doylestown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team dropped a non-conference contest at Delaware Valley University by the score of 3-1 on Thursday night at James Work Gymnasium.

How It Happened
 
* Trailing 2-0 in the match, Abington won a key third set by the score of 25-18. The Nittany Lions used a 7-1 run midway through the set to grab their biggest lead to that point at 13-8.  Abington would go to increase its advantage to as many as eight points after an ace by Brooke Beach made the score 19-11. The Nittany Lions closed out the third set with a kill from freshman Alyssa Flickinger.
 
* Abington nearly came away with a victory in the fourth set which would have forced a fifth and decisive set.  Down just one point at 18-17, Abington ripped off five straight points with Beach totaling two kills in the run to make the score 22-18.  The Aggies followed with three unanswered points to come within one point at 22-21.  Another kill by Beach gave the Nittany Lions a buffer at 23-21, however DelVal responded with four straight points to close out the match winning the fourth set, 25-23.
 
* The Aggies took the opening set, 25-12, and then rallied back in the second set after Abington started with a 7-0 run.  The Nittany Lions led majority of the second set before the Aggies grabbed their first lead at 19-18.  Both teams exchanged points until Abington registered back-to-back points off DelVal errors to give the Nittany Lions a 24-22 lead.  The Aggies followed with three straight kills and took the set at 26-24 after an Abington error.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
*  Beach and Flickinger each totaled 11 kills to lead the Nittany Lions.  The 11 kills for Beach marked a new season-high.  She also had eight digs.
 
* Junior Emma de Mey finished with nine kills, while fellow junior Taylor LaPage and freshman Brianna Brozo each added five kills.
 
* Four Nittany Lions totaled double-digit digs which set new season-highs for each player.  Freshman Jackie Lewis registered a team-high 26 digs, while freshman Sara Schrader totaled 17 digs.  Freshman Laine Kulpinski added 13 digs and freshman Morgan Schaefer finished with 11 digs. 
 
* Kulpinski also tied her season-high with 37 assists tying for the match lead.
 
* For DelVal, Olivia Deffendall totaled a match-high 16 kills, while Victoria Tucker added 12 kills. Cat Nemil recorded a team-high 21 digs finished with 37 assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the sixth meeting between Abington and DelVal since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-3 versus the Aggies in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
It will be United East Conference action the rest of the way for the Nittany Lions.  Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Penn State Berks for a tri-match.  The Nittany Lions will face Berks at 12 p.m. and then take on Penn College at 2 p.m.
