Abington Splits United East Tri-Match

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team split a United East Conference (UEC) tri-match hosted by Penn State Berks on Saturday at the Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center.  The Nittany Lions fell to host Berks, 3-1, but bounced back and defeated Penn College by the score of 3-0.

How It Happened vs. Penn State Berks
 
* Against Berks, Abington fell behind 2-0 in the match after Berks took the first two sets by the score of 25-23 and 25-19.  Abington bounced back in a back-and-forth third set to extend the match.  Berks rallied midway through the set with a 5-0 run to grab an 18-17 lead. Both teams would exchange leads over the next few points before Abington led 21-20 after a Berks errors.  The home squad followed with three straight points to lead, 23-21, with three straight kills.  Abington followed with back-to-back from freshman Brooke Beach and junior Emma de Mey to tie the set at 23-23.  Both teams exchange points with Berks leading 26-25.  However, Abington recorded three straight kills to close out the set.  de Mey tied the set at 26-26 will a kill and then freshman Alyssa Flickinger came up with two straight kills to close the set at 28-26.
 
* In the fourth set Berks jumped out to a 10-2 run, including the first seven points of the set. Ahead 20-9, Berks closed the match with five of the final seven points to take the set 25-11.
 
Inside the Box Score vs. Berks
 
* Abington had three players finish in double-figures in kills.  Beach tied her season-high with 11 kills to go along with nine digs.  Flickinger also totaled 11 kills, while de Mey finished with 10 kills.
 
* Freshman Jackie Lewis recorded a season-high 30 digs to lead the match.
 
* Freshman Laine Kulpinski finished with 36 assists; one shy of her season-high set in each of her previous two matches. 
 
* For Berks, Aubrey Hunt totaled a match-high 13 kills to go along with 15 digs.  Julia Rathsam finished with a match-high 51 assists to go along with 11 digs. 
 
How It Happened vs. Penn College
 
* An 11-0 run midway through the first set gave Abington the momentum to take the opening set by the score of 25-19. Trailing 13-8, the Nittany Lions ripped off 11 straight points started by back-to-back kills from Beach and junior Taylor LaPage.  Beach (3) and LaPage (2) combined for five kills in the run, while Lewis totaled a pair of aces.  Abington also benefited from four straight errors by the Wildcats. 
 
* Momentum carried over into the second set as the Nittany Lions opened with a 4-0 run.  Abington never trailed in the set despite Penn College coming within one point of the lead early on at 6-5.  Later in the set the Nittany Lions used a 9-1 run to pull away from the Wildcats at 21-11.  Abington closed out the set with four straight points with freshman Brianna Brozo clinching the set with a kill for a 25-13 win.
 
* Abington trailed briefly, 4-3, in the third set but a 7-1 run gave the Nittany Lions the lead for good.  The Wildcats would eventually cut the deficit to one at 17-16 but the Nittany Lions followed five unanswered points to increase their lead to 22-16.  Leading 23-19, Abington closed the match thanks to back-to-back miscues by the Wildcats.
 
Inside the Box Score vs. Penn College
 
*  Beach set a new season-high with a match-high 13 kills as she finished the day with 24 kills between the two matches.
 
* de Mey finished with eight kills and four digs, while Flickinger added seven kills.
 
* Freshman Morgan Schaefer recorded a season-high 12 digs to lead the team.
 
* Kulpinski totaled 30 assists marking her fourth straight match with 30 or more assists.  She also totaled 10 digs.
 
* For Penn College, Lauren Hergert led the team with seven kills, while Coryn Oswald added six kills and a match-high 13 digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 2-10 in the series with Berks.  The Nittany Lions and Penn College were meeting for the ninth time since 2014 as Abington is now 9-0 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22 as the Nittany Lions take part in another United East tri-match which will be hosted by Gallaudet University.  Abington will face Penn State Harrisburg at 1 p.m. and then take on host Gallaudet at 3 p.m.
