Abington Drops United East Tri-Match

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) tri-match hosted by Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon at the GU Field House.  The Nittany Lions came up short against Penn State Harrisburg, 3-0, in their first match and then fell to the host Bison by the same score.

How It Happened vs. Penn State Harrisburg
 
* With Abington leading 6-5 early in the opening set, Harrisburg went on a 7-0 run to grab a 12-6 lead.  Harrisburg would go on to lead by as many as seven points in the set at 18-11 before taking the set, 25-17.
 
* In the second set, Harrisburg opened with a 12-2 run and went on to take a 2-0 lead in the match with another 25-17 victory.  Abington was able to cut the deficit down to three thanks to an 8-1 surge that made the score 13-10 but that was as close as the team would get of the lead. 
 
* The third set was close throughout until late when Harrisburg scored seven straight points down 17-15 to grab a 22-17 advantage.  Abington followed with back-to-back points to make it 22-20 before Harrisburg closed out the match scoring the final three points to take the set, 25-20.

* Freshman Alyssa Flickinger led Abington with 10 kills, while junior Emma de Mey finished with eight kills.
 
* Freshman Jackie Lewis recorded a match-high 16 digs.
 
* Junior Sammy Burkert totaled a season-high nine digs.
 
* Freshman Laine Kulpinski finished with 25 assists.
 
* For Harrisburg, Tori Henderson totaled a match-high 13 kills to go along with 14 digs.  Alyssa Snyder recorded 38 assists while totaling seven digs on defense.
 
How It Happened vs. Gallaudet
 
* Gallaudet limited Abington to a season-low 12 kills for the match.  The Bison took the opening set with a 25-10 victory fueled by an early 8-0 run after Abington scored the first point of the set.  The Nittany Lions made it a 13-8 set, but the Bison responded with five straight points to increase their lead to double-figures at 18-8.
 
* In the second set, Abington fell behind early at 7-2, but would go on to cut the deficit down to two points at 8-6.  That would be as close as the Nittany Lions would get of the lead the rest of the set.  Abington scored two points late to make the score 21-17 but Gallaudet ripped off four straight points to close the set at 25-17.
 
* Gallaudet held the Nittany Lions to just six points in the final set.  The Bison opened with an 11-2 run and never looked back.  Gallaudet took the match with a 25-6 victory in the third set.

* Lewis led the team with 16 digs as she finished the tri-match with 32 and averaged over five digs per set.
 
* Freshman Kennedy Austin set a season-high with eight digs.
 
* Sophomore Amanda Swan-Geiger and de Mey each had three kills against the Bison.
 
* For Gallaudet, Emily Wright registered a match-high 12 kills, while Anya Pothorski finished with nine kills.  Emma Giuntoli paced the offense with 30 kills to go along with nine digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 4-6 versus Harrisburg in the all-time series.  Against Gallaudet, the Nittany Lions and Bison were facing off for the 13th time since 2011.  Abington is now 1-12 versus Gallaudet.
 
Next Up
Abington will conclude the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 as the Nittany Lions host a United East tri-match with Morrisville State College and St. Mary's College.  Abington will face the Mustangs at 12 p.m. and then take on the Seahawks at 4 p.m.
