Abington Drops Conference Match at St. Mary’s

St. Mary's City, Md. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team fell to conference foe St. Mary's College by the score of 4-2 in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at Jamie L. Roberts Stadium.

How It Happened
 
* St. Mary's broke a 0-0 tie with the game's first goal in the 29th minute.  Lily Mellendick scored her third goal of the season to give the Seahawks the 1-0 lead.
 
* The Seahawks doubled their lead early in the second half when Ella Raines made it a 2-0 game in the 49th minute with her 10th goal of the season.
 
* Abington cut the lead in half in the 56th minute with sophomore Sarah Gibbons coming through with her fourth goal of the season. 
 
* St. Mary's added two more goals midway through the second half to increase its lead to 4-1.  Gracie Duch scored her third goal of the season in the 63rd minute and Mia McKenzie capped the Seahawks' scoring with her first goal in the 69th minute.
 
* Sophomore Madison McDowell connected on her seventh goal of the season in the 80th minute to cut the score to 4-2.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* McDowell's seventh goal of the season tied her career-high and with the score also increased her season points total to 17 setting a new career-high.
 
* Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Wilfrid totaled seven saves in net for the Nittany Lions after facing a season-high 27 shots by the Seahawks.
 
* St. Mary's outshot Abington, 27-5, and held the advantage on corner kicks by a 13-3 margin.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the second meeting between Abington and St. Mary's in the all-time series dating back to just last season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-2-0 versus the Seahawks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15 as the Nittany Lions host Lancaster Bible College in United East action.  Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Memorial Field.  The team's non-conference contest scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 11 at John Jay College has been canceled.
