Abington Splits Tri-Match to Open United East Play

Aurora, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team opened up United East Conference (UEC) action with a split against host Wells College and Lancaster Bible College on Saturday at the Frances Tarlton Farenthold Athletic Wing.  The Nittany Lions defeated Wells, 3-2, and fell short against Lancaster Bible, 3-1.

How It Happened vs. Wells
 
* Trailing 2-1 in the match, Abington forced a fifth and decisive set with a 25-22 victory in set four.  With the set tied 13-13, the Nittany Lions ripped off six straight points to take a 19-13 lead.  However, Wells followed with a 7-1 surge to tie the set again at 20-20.  A kill by junior Emma de Mey followed by an attack error by Wells gave the Nittany Lions a 22-20 advantage.  Both teams would exchange the next three points in the set before Abington clinched the set thanks to back-to-back miscues by the Express.
 
* In the fifth set Abington trailed early on at 4-0 but responded with three straight points to come within a point of the lead.  Wells continued to hold a steady lead at 8-5 before Abington came soaring back with nine unanswered points to lead 14-8.  Freshman Alyssa Flickinger and de Mey each had two kills in the run, while junior Sammy Burkert added a pair of aces during the final run. After two points by the Express, Abington sealed the win off an attack error from Wells.
 
* After dropping the opening set Abington recovered and took the second set with ease at 25-9.  The Nittany Lions totaled a match-high 11 kills in the second set while committing just one error on the attack.

*  de Mey recorded a team-high 13 kills to tie her season-high.  She also finished with a season-high 13 digs.
 
* Freshman Brooke Beach set season-highs with nine kills and 17 digs, while fellow freshman Brianna Brozo established season-highs with eight kills and five block assists.
 
* Burkert recorded seven of the team's 21 aces to set a new career-high.
 
* Freshman Laine Kulpinski paced the offense with a season-high 37 assists to go along with 10 digs.
 
* Freshman Jackie Lewis led the team with a match-high 20 digs.
 
* For Wells, Miah Willamson totaled a match-high 19 kills, while Roosa Armstead-Lehti led the team with 19 digs.  Brianah Dawson finished with 37 assists and 14 digs.
 
How It Happened vs. Lancaster Bible
 
* Abington took the opening set by a 25-21 margin.  The Nittany Lions broke a 10-10 tie with a 6-2 run and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way despite Lancaster Bible coming within three points at 19-16.  Abington led by as many as six points down the stretch after an ace by de Mey made the score 22-16.
 
* Lancaster Bible tied the match with a 25-18 victory in the second set.  With a 19-18 lead late in the set the Chargers went on to score the final six points of the set to tie the match.  Another big run in the third set gave the Chargers the edge in the match.  Trailing 9-5, Lancaster Bible fired off nine straight points to grab a 14-9 advantage.  The Nittany Lions cut the deficit down to one point at 17-16 thanks to a pair of errors by the Chargers, but Lancaster Bible followed with two straight points to re-establish a three points lead.  The Chargers took the set, 25-20.
 
* Abington fell behind 6-1 in the fourth set but bounced back to tie the score at 6-6 with a quick 5-0 run. All five points came off Charger errors apart from a service ace by Beach.  With the score tied, Lancaster Bible went on an 8-1 run to build a 14-7 lead.  The Nittany Lions came as close as five points of the lead at 16-11 but were unable to get any close as the Chargers finished the match with a 25-14 win.

* Beach and Brozo each finished with seven kills to lead the team.  Beach also had seven digs.
 
* de Mey added six kills to go along with seven digs, while Kulpinski totaled 14 assists and four aces.  
 
* Lewis totaled a team-high 20 digs.
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Morgan Fenstermacher totaled a match-high 21 kills, while Grace Farlow finished with 13.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2012 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-5 all-time against the Express.  Abington and Lancaster Bible were meeting for the 11th time since 2011 as the Nittany Lions are now 1-10 versus the Chargers all-time.

Abington returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 13 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Delaware Valley University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
