Abington Holds Off Arcadia with 84-77 Victory

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team came away with an 84-77 victory over visiting Arcadia University in a non-conference contest on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  The game featured twin brothers as Abington head coach Ryan Van Zelst squared off against his brother Adam.  It's the first time in NCAA history that twins have faced one another as opposing coaches.

How It Happened
 
* Trailing 15-11 at the 12:13 mark of the first half, Abington quickly erased its largest deficit of the game with a 6-0 run to lead 17-15.  A layup score by junior Jake Schalki capped the run midway through the half. 
 
* Both teams went back and forth down the final stretch of the opening half.  With the game tied at 33-33 with 2:42 to play until halftime, the Nittany Lions closed out the half scoring the final six points to lead 39-33 at the half.
 
* Abington held on to its lead the entire second half and pushed its advantage to double-figures for the first time at the 11:19 mark.  Two free throws by senior Alex Salata III gave the Nittany Lions a 59-49 lead.
 
* Abington led by as many as 12 points in the second half.  A three-pointer by senior Alex Podolski made the score 71-59 with 5:35 to play in regulation.  Podolski made all four of his three-pointers in the second half.
 
* Arcadia cut the deficit down to six points in the final minute after a three-pointer by Kameron Parks made the score 79-73 with :44 seconds to play.  However, the Nittany Lions converted 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the final :40 seconds to hold off the Knights.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Junior Darrion Harris led the Nittany Lions with 21 points marking his fourth straight 20-plus point performance.  He connected on 11-of-13 from the free throw line.

* Podolski scored a season-high 18 points (6-11 FG) as he knocked down 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.  Podolski totaled 14 of his 18 points in the second half. He also grabbed five rebounds.
 
* Senior Brian Randolph III tied his season-high with 17 points.
 
* Schalki grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to go along with six points.
 
* For Arcadia, Jalen Watkins led all scorers with 39 points on 16-of-20 shooting from the field.  He also finished with 15 rebounds to complete the double-double.  Dom Vazquez added 19 points, five rebounds and five assists.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the ninth meeting between Abington and Arcadia since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions have won the last three match-ups in the series and are now 3-6 versus the Knights all-time.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle until Wednesday, Nov. 30 when the Nittany Lions travel to face Immaculata University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 8 p.m.
