Abington Falls to Eastern in Season Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped its season opener to visiting Eastern University by the score of 76-55 in a non-conference contest on Wednesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Eastern trailed 25-21 midway through the second quarter and used a 17-5 run to close out the half to lead 38-30 at halftime. 
 
* Abington cut the deficit down to four points early in the third quarter after a jumper by Angela Sanders made the score 40-36 at the 7:26 mark.
 
* The Eagles, over the final seven minutes of the third quarter, went on a 17-4 surge to take a healthy 57-40 lead heading into the final frame.  Jeriyah Johnson capped the scoring with a jumper in the final seconds.
 
* Eastern maintained its double-digit lead in the fourth quarter and led by as many as 22 points late in the quarter at 73-51.
 
* Abington grabbed its first lead of the game in the final minute of the first quarter.  With the score tied at
15-15, Cassie Tavormina scored a layup basket.  On the team's next possession Tavormina hit a jumper to make the score 19-15 heading into the second quarter.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sanders recorded 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field.  She also grabbed seven rebounds.
 
* Tavormina finished in double-figures with a 15-point performance (6-10 FG).
 
* Isabella Vazquez finished with 11 points as she converted 9-of-12 from the free throw line.
 
* Jade Wilson led the team with 10 rebounds to go along with three points.
 
* For Eastern, Jeriyah Johnson came off the bench and led all scorers with 20 points (8-18 FG).  Ebony Johnson added 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked just the second meeting between Abington and Eastern with the first match up coming in the 2019-20 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 0-2 versus the Eagles in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 15 as the Nittany Lions host Rosemont College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 6 p.m.
