Abington Outlasts Morrisville in United East Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team will start United East Conference (UEC) action with one in the win column after defeating Morrisville State College, 64-58, on Friday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to an 8-0 lead after making its first three shots of the game including a pair of three-pointers by senior Isaac Kennon.  The Mustangs cut the Abington lead down to one point at 10-9 at the 12:41 mark but the Nittany Lions responded with an 8-0 run to grab its biggest lead of the half.  Senior Alex Salata III drained a three point to make the score 18-9 midway through the half.
 
* Morrisville chipped away at the deficit and would cap the scoring in the half when Shykell Brown hit a three-pointer to cut the Abington lead down to 27-23 at the half.
 
* Abington grew its lead back to nine points with a mini 5-0 run to start the second half as Kennon once again knocked down another three-point to jumpstart the half.  Kennon finished the game 5-of-6 from deep range.
 
* As the half progressed, Abington expanded its lead to double-digits for the first time when Salata connected on a three-pointer to make the score 39-27 at the 15:05 mark. The Nittany Lions would swell their lead to as many as 15 points after sophomore Lexuus Fasce split a pair of free throws to make the score 42-27 with 13:26 to play.
 
* Over the next three-plus minutes the Mustangs went on an 11-0 run to come within four points of the Abington lead at 42-38.  Morrisville made it a two-point game with 7:20 to play when Brown drained a three-pointer to make the score 48-46. 
 
* Abington once again responded and quickly built its lead back up with six unanswered points.  A layup basket by senior Brian Ranolph III gave Abington a 54-46 lead with five minutes to go in regulation.
 
* Down the stretch Morrisville cut the Abington lead to 59-58 with :48 seconds remaining.  After a timeout by the Nittany Lions, Salata connected on a basket and then converted a free throw to finish off the three-point play and give Abington a 62-58 lead with :32 seconds showing on the clock.
 
* Abington sealed the victory in the final seconds as the defense made two big stops and junior Jake Schalki converted a pair of free throws with just under two seconds on the clock.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Abington had a trio of players finish in double-figures with Salata leading the way with a team-high 18 points.  Kennon added 15 points, while Schalki finished with 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.  The trio also accounted for all nine three-pointers shooting a combined 9-of-12 from beyond the arc.  Kennon drained five (5-g 3FG), while Salata went 3-of-5 and Schalki connecting on his lone attempt.
 
* Randolph finished the night with eight points to go along with two blocks and two steals on defense.
 
* Abington never trailed after opening the game on an 8-0 run and not once was the score tied.
 
* For Morrisville, Shykell Brown finished with a game-high 19 points to go along with eight rebounds.  Jordan Coard recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 15th meeting between Abington and Morrisville since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-11 versus the Mustangs after winning three of the last four meetings in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to the court Saturday afternoon as the Nittany Lions host St. Mary's College in United East action.  Tip-off from the Abington Athletic Building is set for 3 p.m.
