Abington Wins Fifth Straight with Victory Over St. Mary’s

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team continues to roll as the Nittany Lions won their fifth straight game after knocking off St. Mary's College, 71-62, in United East Conference (UEC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Abington Athletic Building.  It marks the team's first five-game winning streak since winning five in a row early in the 2019-20 season.

* Abington led by as many as 10 points early in the second half when a layup basket by junior Jake Schalki gave the Nittany Lions a 37-27 lead at the 18:24 mark.
 
* As the half progressed, St. Mary's eventually tied the game at 52-52 after a jumper by Olumide Lewis with 6:28 to play in regulation.  The Nittany Lions quickly responded as Schalki scored a layup basket on the team's ensuing possession to regain the lead. 
 
* The Seahawks tied the game once more at 58-58 with 1:34 to play.  Senior Alex Salata III would follow with a pair of free throws to give the Nittany Lions a 60-58 lead.  After a stop defensively, the Nittany Lions came through with a clutch three-pointer as senior Isaac Kennon knocked down a three to increase the lead to 63-58.  Salata's two free throws and Kennon's three-pointer jump-started an 11-0 run over the next minute to give Abington a 69-58 lead with :19 seconds remaining. 
 
* Overall, the Nittany Lions outscored the Seahawks, 13-4, in the final 1:22 of the game to pull off the 71-62 victory.
 
* Abington led the entire game with the exception of a 7-5 lead by the Seahawks at the 13:34 mark of the first half. The Nittany Lions led by as many as nine points in the first half on two occasions with the latter coming at the 3:11 mark when sophomore Kolby Miller hit a jumper to make the score 28-19.  Abington led 33-27 at the half.

* Podolski led all scorers with a game-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and two steals.  Senior Brian Randolph III also scored in double-figures as he added 14 points while collecting five boards, two assists, two blocks and three steals.
 
* Salata contributed nine points and four assists, while Kennon and Schalki each totaled eight points.
 
* For St. Mary's, Gary Grant scored a team-high 15 points off the bench after connecting on 4-of-5 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line.  Jordan Goodwin finished the day with 14 points (6-8 FG).

Taking Advantage at the Line
After converting 18-of-19 from the free throw line today, Abington is now shooting 82.5-percent from the charity stripe this season as the team currently ranks in the top-five among the Division III leaders.  Abington has converted 132-of-160 through eight games, while its opponents have connected on only 64.3-percent (81-126). 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth meeting between Abington and St. Mary's since the start of the 2018-19 season.  Today's win marked the first by the Nittany Lions in the all-time series snapping a four-game losing streak to the Seahawks.

Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 6 as the Nittany Lions host Salisbury University in a non-conference contest.  Tip-off from the Athletic Building is set for 7 p.m.
