Abington Defeats Bryn Athyn in ‘Battle of the Lions’

Bryn Athyn, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team defeated Bryn Athyn College by the score of 54-42 in the 'Battle of the Lions' on Thursday night at the Asplundh Field House.

How It Happened
 
* Bryn Athyn scored the game's first basket but from there it was all Abington the rest of the way.  The Nittany Lions followed with a 14-0 run to lead 14-2 at the 13:44 mark after senior Alex Podolski capped the run with a three-pointer. 
 
* Abington led by as many as 16 points in the opening half as the Nittany Lions took a 34-18 lead into the half after senior Alex Salata III converted a three-point play after draining a free throw with 3:50 remaining in the half.
 
* The Abington lead swelled to as high as 20 points on two occasions in the second half with the latter coming at the 7:13 mark.  Salata made a pair of free throws to make the score 46-26. 
 
* Bryn Athyn made things interesting with a 16-5 run over the final seven minutes and came within nine points of the lead at 51-42.  However, with only :21 seconds remaining on the clock, time was not on the home team's side.  Junior Jake Schalki scored a layup basket and split a pair of free throws in the final seconds to increase Abington's lead back to double digits.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Abington had three players score in double figures with senior Isaac Kennon leading the way with a game-high 14 points (5-10 FG | 4-8 3FG).  Kennon also grabbed seven rebounds and totaled a career-high five blocks on defense.
 
* Schalki finished with 11 points (5-8 FG) and shared the team lead in rebounds with seven. 
 
* Senior Brian Randolph III added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and three steals.
 
* Salata finished with seven points and six rebounds to go along with a team-high five assists.
 
* For Bryn Athyn, Jaryn McCann was the lone player in double-figures as he finished the game with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to record a double-double.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 12th meeting between Abington and Bryn Athyn since the start of the 2013-14 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-4 versus the Lions in the all-time series.  Abington has won the last five contests in the series.
 
National Leaders
Abington entered tonight's game ranked second among Division III leaders in free throw percentage at 81.82.  The Nittany Lions converted 8-of-10 from the line in tonight's victory.
 
Next Up
Abington is idle until after the New Year as the Nittany Lions will return to action on Monday, Jan. 2.  Abington will travel to face Cairn University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
