Abington Kicks Off the New Year with 67-61 Victory at Cairn

Langhorne, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team improved to 8-3 after coming away with a 67-61 victory at Cairn University in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at the Mason Activity Center.

How It Happened
 
* The Nittany Lions overcame an eight-point deficit to record their seventh victory in eight games.  Abington trailed 37-29 in the final seconds of the opening half before senior Alex Salata III drained a jumper as time expired to make it a six-point (37-31) game heading into halftime.
 
* Senior Alex Podolski opened the second half with back-to-back jumpers on the team's first two possessions to make it a one possession game at 37-33.  Cairn responded with a three-pointer by Aytor Alberto on its next possession.
 
* As the half progressed, Abington came within one point of the lead multiple times and finally tied the game at 43-43 when Salata converted a pair of free throws at the 14:11 mark.  Two possessions later the Nittany Lions grabbed the lead thanks to a three-pointer by sophomore Lexuus Fasce to make the score 46-43.
 
* The Nittany Lions didn't relinquish the lead the rest of the way holding the advantage for the final 13 minutes of the game.  Abington increased its lead to as many as 10 points late in the half.  A three-pointer by senior Brian Randolph III gave the Nittany Lions a 67-57 lead with 1:21 to play in regulation.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Salata led all scorers with a game-high 20 points (5-8 FG) as he connected on 10-of-10 free throw attempts. He also shared the team lead with five assists.
 
* Randolph also scored in double-figures finishing with 13 points (6-12 FG) as he filled the box score with six rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.
 
* Senior Isaac Kennon added 10 points, three rebounds and five assists.
 
* Junior Jake Schalki finished the game with nine points and a team-high 10 rebounds.  He also blocked a pair of shots on defense.
 
* Free throws played a factor in the game as the Nittany Lions shot 12-of-12 from the line with Salata accounting for 10 of the team's attempts.  The Highlanders went to the line 21 times but only connected on eight of their opportunities.
 
* For Cairn, Derian Bradford finished with a team-high 19 points.  Kameron Clark recorded a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the eighth meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2012-13 season.  With the win the Nittany Lions tied the all-time series at 4-4. 
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Jan. 6 as the Nittany Lions resume United East Conference play with a road contest at Penn State Berks.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
