MORRISVILLE, NY – Senior
Wynter Bess took over for the Penn State Nittany Lions in historic fashion during their penultimate United East College women's basketball match-up against host SUNY Morrisville, but it wasn't enough in a 90-72 setback.
Bess finished with 39 points, the third-highest single-game total in school history and just one shy of the record that
Shayna Rodriguez set on two different occasions. Bess reached that total thanks to an 18-for-33 effort from the field, both school record. The 18 made field goals surpassed Rodriguez, who had 15 made shots against Wells College in 2016.
Bess got started quickly, nailing a jump shot only seven seconds into the contest. Throughout the rest of the quarter, she had 13 of the Nittany Lions' (7-16, 6-9) 17 points. Her dominance carried over the next three quarters and she finished with six rebounds and five steals in addition to her 39 points while playing every minute of the contest.
The Mustangs (16-7, 12-3) led by seven at halftime and extended their advantage to double digits in the third. They led by as many as 19 as they shot 20-for-32 from the field in the second half.
In addition to Bess,
Angela Sanders was the key figure in Penn State Abington's offense, scoring 21 points of her own.
Camille Fleming hit double figures in rebounding with 12.
Morrisville was led by Kayla Dykas and her 15 points.
The Nittany Lions will finish their season tomorrow afternoon at Wells.
