FAYETTEVILLE, NC -- Penn State Abington's bats took control early, but it wasn't enough as the Nittany Lions fell to Hampden-Sydney College, 16-6, in the second day of the Armstrong Invitational at Methodist College.
The Nittany Lions (2-2) got things going early, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first on RBIs by
Zach Morales and
Tim Petrucelli. They added a run in the third on a run-scoring single by
Chase Swain.
Anthony Bencardino did a phenomenal job keeping the Tigers (4-2) at bay as he did not allowi a single hit and held them scoreless through five innings.
Hampden-Syndey took control in the top of the sixth with a three-run inning and proceeded to outscore Abington 16-3 over the remainder of the game.
The Tigers had nine players record a hit today while three players recorded multiple RBIs (Tymothy Hart, Ethan Currin, and Johnny Oates II).
The Nittany Lions were led by freshman
Chase Swain, who went 3-4 from the plate, scored two runs and knocked in one. Morales was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while McCarty notched two hits and two runs scored.
Penn State Abington wraps up tournament action on Sunday when it faces DeSales University.
