Abington Softball Ends Spring Break Trip With Twinbill Split

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Penn State Abington softball team ended its Spring Break trip by splitting a pair of games on Friday. The Nittany Lions opened with an 11-3 setback to Wilkes University, but bounced back with an impressive 8-3 triumph Montclair State University.

Penn State Abington went 2-4 on the trip with two others games cancelled due to inclement weather.

The nightcap saw the Nittany Lions fall behind 2-0 after one, but they tied it in the top of the second on Hailey Gamble's two-run double. Montclair State plated one in the third before Megan Tomoney gave Penn State Abington the lead for good in the fourth as she smacked a two-run homer over the left field fence.

The Nittany Lions added to their advantage with four runs in the fifth thanks to two-run singles by Maddie Duffy and Jenna Gorman. Both players went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the game. Gamble and Tomoney were each 1-for-3 with two RBIs while Abbi Long and Mark Kate Smith had three and two hits respectively. Elyssa Bohr picked up the win as she allowed two earned runs and seven hits over seven innings.

In the Wilkes game, the Colonels scored their 11 runs over the first three innings, en route to the five-inning win. Penn State Abington got its runs in the first and second innings as Grace Renninger hit a two-run triple in the opening stanza while Duffy doubled in a run in the second. They had one hit apiece while Smith was the lone player with a multiple-hit game as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Nittany Lions return to action on Wednesday, March 16 when they travel to Neumann University for a non-conference doubleheader.
