Penn State Abington Softball Opens United East Play With Twinbill Sweep

ABINGTON, PA – Penn State Abington opened United East Conference play by sweeping visiting Morrisville State College on Friday. The Nittany Lions earned an 11-0, five-inning win in the opener and then used a walk-off single to secure a 6-5 triumph in the nightcap.

Penn State Abington (7-5, 2-0) was firing on all cylinders in the first game, taking an 11-0 lead after just four innings of action. The Nittany Lions got things going with an RBI triple to center field from Lauren VanHoeven in the bottom of the first and she scored on a Jenna Gorman double.

Gorman had a sacrifice to highlight a four-run second inning and Drew Liss doubled in a run in the third. In the fourth, Liss had the big blow with a two-run triple. Liss was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Elyssa Bohr was the key piece to Abington's first victory of the day, pitching a complete game and allowing just two hits. Both of Morrisville's (0-10, 0-2) hits came late in the game with Bohr having a near-perfect game until then. Over five innings, she struck out six batters.

During their second game, the Nittany Lions didn't skip a beat, scoring a flurry of runs in the bottom of the second to take a quick 4-0 lead. Penn State Abington held a 5-0 lead until the top of the 5th when the Mustangs rallied back to make it a 5-3 game. Morgan Dueber then hit a sacrifice fly followed by a run from Emma Thompson to tie things up going into the bottom of the seventh.

Abbi Long stepped up to plate in the bottom of the 7th, hitting a single and subsequently stealing second base on the next at-bat. Bohr then singled to center field and the two moved up a base on a wild pitch. That set things up for Megan Tomoney for a walk-off single for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State Abington faces a quick turnaround, hosting Wells College in another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
