Abington Softball Sweeps Wells, Runs Winning Streak To Six

ABINGTON, PA -- The Penn State Abington softball team notched 42 runs and 42 hits as the Nittany Lions swept visiting Wells College, 26-1 and 16-0, to remain undefeated in United East Conference action.
 
Penn State Abington upped its overall winning streak to six and its record to 9-5, including a 4-0 mark in conference play. The Express fell to 0-6, 0-2.  
 
Penn State Abington took control with a dominant first inning in the opener, scoring 11 runs on just six hits. Laura VanHoeven had two hits and three RBIs in the inning while Jenna Gorman and Drew Liss knocked in two runs apiece.

The Nittany Lions added 15 more in the second and finished their first game with 26 runs on 20 hits while holding the Express to just two through five innings of action.
 
Both Mary Kate Smith and Grace Renninger led Penn State Abington with three hits each while Liss had four RBIs. Eight Nittany Lions finished with at least two hits and two RBIs. Elyssa Bohr and VanHoeven kept Wells at bay, with each only allowing one hit each while combining for 10 strikeouts.
 
In the nightcap, pitcher Gretchen Yanss dominated on the mound, striking out three batters while only allowing two hits during a complete-game shutout. She received plenty of offense from her teammates as they notched nine runs in the first innings and four more in the second. In the first, Hailey Gamble and Renninger each had two-run doubles while added one in the second.
 
Both Renninger and Smith had four hits and three RBIs apiece while Gamble was 3-for-3, scored three runs and knocked in five.
 
The Nittany Lions are back in action next Saturday, April 2 when they travel to conference rival Penn State Harrisburg.
