Abington Outpowers Gwynedd Mercy for Fifth Straight Win


Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team scored 25 runs in a non-conference contest at Gwynedd Mercy University and came away with a 25-14 victory over the Griffins on Thursday afternoon at the Gwynedd Mercy Baseball Field.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored 11 runs in the opening inning as the Nittany Lions took advantage of seven walks by Gwynedd Mercy pitching.  Senior Jaden Himmelreich highlighted the inning with a two-run single.  Abington also benefited from two errors by the Griffins as 17 batters came to the plate in the top half of the inning.
 
* The Griffins responded in the bottom of the first with 10 runs of their own to make it an 11-10 game after one full inning.  Frank Ebling came up with a three-run homer for the home team in the inning.
 
* In the second, Abington added two more runs to make the score 13-10.  Senior Ryan McCarty recorded a run scoring double and then scored on a single to left field by fellow senior Zach Morales.
 
* The Nittany Lions scored again in the fourth with another run scoring hit by Morales to make the score 14-10.  Abington tacked on another run to its lead in the sixth off a solo home run by McCarty before scoring another single run in the seventh to take a 16-11 lead.
 
* Abington never trailed in the game and went on to score three times in the eighth with run scoring hits by sophomore Andrew Lastowka and junior Montana Milward.
 
* The offense stayed hot for the final frame as the Nittany Lions scored six more runs all off home runs.  McCarty led the inning off will a solo shot for his second long ball of the game.  Later in the inning Lastowka cleared the bases with a grand slam over the center field fence.  Freshman Chase Swain capped the scoring with a solo home run to make it a 25-14 game.
 
* Sophomore Mitchell Carmody (1-0) silenced the Griffins' offense as he picked up the victory after 5.1 innings of relief.  He held Gwynedd Mercy to just four hits and one unearned run on his way to his first win at Abington.  He also struck out a pair of batters.
 
* The Gwynedd Mercy added runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* McCarty was one of two players for Abington to finish with four hits as he went 4-for-5 at the plate with six runs and four RBI.  His two home runs tied his season-high as he now has 12 home runs on the year.
 
* Morales also had four hits in the game tying his season-high as he went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. 
 
* Lastowka went 2-for-5 with three runs and career-high five RBI.  His ninth inning grand slam marked his first career home run.
 
* Junior Sean Doherty tied his career-high with four runs scored in the game as he went 1-for-3 with a career-high four walks. 
 
* Swain finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and four runs, which tied a season-high. 
 
* Abington has scored a combined 71 runs and collected 59 hits during its current five-game winning streak.  As a team, the Nittany Lions are hitting a combined .324 in the last five games.
 
* For the Griffins, T.J. Brasier went 4-for-5 with four runs and two RBI.  Ebling drove in a team-high three runs after a 2-for-5 performance at the plate.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the sixth meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2012 season and the first since the 2017 campaign. The Nittany Lions are now 4-2 versus the Griffins in that span.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action tomorrow to host Penn State Berks in the first of a three-game series in United East action.  Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
