Abington Wins Sixth Straight with 10-8 Victory Over Berks


Jenkintown, Pa. – Sophomore Tim Petrucelli hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to break an 8-8 tie as the Penn State Abington baseball team defeated Penn State Berks, 10-8, in United East action on Friday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.

How It Happened
 
* With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Petrucelli connected on a long fly ball to right field that hit off the fence to drive in two runs to give Abington a 10-8 lead.  Ryan McCarty and Zach Morales recorded back-to-back singles prior to Petrucelli's at-bat, all coming with two outs.
 
* A four-run eighth inning by Berks tied the game to set up the dramatic finish in the bottom of the inning.  Berks scored three of its four runs after two outs in the inning.
 
* Berks opened the game with a pair of runs in the first, but the lead was short-lived as Abington responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Morales and Petrucelli each drove in a run to tie the game at 2-2.
 
* Abington increased its lead to 4-2 after single runs in the third and fourth innings. Junior Sean Doherty had a run scoring double in the third and senior Jaden Himmelreich drove in a run in the fourth inning.
 
* In the bottom of the seventh, Abington doubled its lead with four runs.  Four different players drove in runs in the inning, manufacturing runs off a sacrifice fly, an infield hit, a bunt single and a sacrifice bunt.

* McCarty led Abington with three hits (3-4) as he scored three times in the game.
 
* Petrucelli tied his season-high with three RBI as he went 2-for-3 with a run. 
 
* Morales and Doherty each drove in a pair of runs in the victory.  Morales finished 2-for-4, while Doherty went 2-for-5 at the plate. 
 
* Freshman Greg Wiley went six strong innings for Abington as he allowed just two runs on four hits in the no-decision.  McCarty (3-1) was the pitcher of record after 2.2 innings of relief as he picked up his third win of the season.
 
* For Berks, Chad Evans went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while Nate Trovinger went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 32nd meeting between Abington and Perks dating back to the 2011 season.  The series is now tied 16-16 with Abington winning the last nine contests.
 
Next Up
Both teams will face off again tomorrow with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
