WINTER HAVEN, FL – Saint Joseph's College of Maine scored nine of its 17 runs in the last two innings, en route to a 17-7 triumph over Penn State Abington. The game was called after eight innings.
For the Nittany Lions, it was their first loss in four games on their Spring Break trip. They fell to 5-5 overall while the Monks improved to 2-2.
Penn State Abington trailed throughout, including 8-3 going into the top of the seventh. The Nittany Lions got one in the stanza on a sacrifice fly by
Anthony Bencardino, but Saint Joseph's responded with four in the bottom of the inning for a 12-4 advantage.
Back came Penn State Abington in the eighth as an RBI double by
Chase Swain and a two-run single by
Tim Petrucelli pulled the team to within five. However, the Monks put the game away with five tallies in the bottom of the eighth.
For the Nittany Lions, Petrucelli had the lone multiple-RBI performance while
Ryan McCarty went 2-for-5 with a double and his sixth home run of the season. The six home runs are already one shy of tying the school's single-season mark of 7 by Daniel Hill in 2011. Swain went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in the loss.
The Monks were led by Drew Healey and Ben Gravel as they combined to go 7-for-10 with two doubles, a home run, six runs scored and six RBIs.
