MYRTLE BEACH, SC – Penn State Abington battled top teams in 21
st-ranked Gettysburg College and Kean University and came away with narrow losses. The Nittany Lions began the day with a 10-5 setback to the Bullets before a 2-0 loss to the Cougars.
In the opener, Penn State Abington (1-3) took a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to a bases loaded walk to
Abbi Long and a run-scoring error. It stayed that way until the fifth when Gettysburg (5-1) scored five times.
Back came the Nittany Lions in the top of the sixth as
Jenna Gorman's triple scored
Hailey Gamble. Gorman then crossed home plate on Long's infield single and the team found themselves down by just one.
However, the Bullets answered with five runs in their half of the sixth for a 10-4 lead. Gorman knocked in the last run of the game in the seventh with an RBI single. Gorman was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Long knocked in two with a 1-for-2 effort.
In the second game, Penn State Abington got a standout pitching performance from freshman Gretchen Yanss as she went the full seven innings and allowed just two runs and eight hits to the Cougars (6-2). However, Kean hurler Heather Clevenger was even better as she tossed a three-hit shutout.
The Cougars got their runs in the second and fifth innings on RBIs from Karly Messina and Paige Metz respectively. The Nittany Lions put the tying run at the plate in the seventh, but Clevenger got out of it for the shutout.
