Abington Splits with Berks in United East Doubleheader


Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team split an United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader against visiting Penn State Berks on Saturday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.  Berks took the opener by the score of 7-3 before Abington closed out the three-game series with a 14-4 victory in the night cap.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* After falling behind 2-0 in the top half of the first, Abington came back with three runs of its own to lead 3-2 after one full inning.  Senior Zach Morales highlighted the inning with a three-run homer to left-center field. 
 
* Berks regained the lead in the top half of the fourth with four runs to take a 6-3 advantage.  Colin Templin and Nate Trovinger each had run scoring hits in the inning.
 
* Berks tacked on another run in the seventh with a run scoring hit by Logan Ewert.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Morales' first inning home run marked his second of the season.  His three RBI tied a season-high.
 
* Chase Swain, Sean Doherty and Tim Petrucelli each had a hit in the game.
 
* For Berks, Kolbie Reeser went 3-for-4, while Joe Gramignan and Templin each went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
 
* Alex Laudenslager (3-2) earned the win for Berks with a complete game performance.  In seven innings of work, he allowed two earned runs off four hits.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Abington offense came to life early on with three runs in the first inning.  Swain and Doherty reached base and then a double steal set the stage for a two-run single by Ryan McCarty.  McCarty would later score on a sacrifice fly by Louis Rossner.
 
* Abington blew the game open with a five-run third inning.  Rossner highlighted the inning with a bases clearing double that scored three runs.  Morales and Jaden Himmelreich also drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Berks scored a lone run in the fourth and then tallied three in the fifth to cut the scored to 8-4.  Nick Bergeman drove in a pair of runs in the fifth with a two-run single.
 
* Abington got two of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth and then increased its lead to 11-4 in the sixth.  McCarty led the inning off with a solo shot for his 13th homer of the season.
 
* Abington capped the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the eight.  Petrucelli drove in a run with a sacrifice fly before freshman Anthony Bencardino launched a two-run homer over the right field fence for his fourth home run of the season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Senior Gregg Sywulak (1-0) earned his first win of the season after 4.1 scoreless innings of relief.  Sywulak struck out seven of the 14 batters faced setting a season-high. 
 
* McCarty went 4-for-5 at the plate with four runs and three RBI.  His sixth inning home run marked the 13th of the season, which is tops in Division III. 
 
* Rossner finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI; one shy of his season-high. 
 
*. For Berks, Chad Evans went 4-for-5 with a run scored.   Nick Bergeman went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 33rd and 34th meetings between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011 season.  The series is now tied 17-17 with Abington winning 10 of the last 11 contests.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 5 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Rowan University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
