Abington Wins Fifth Straight After Sweeping Gallaudet

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team cruised past Gallaudet University in United East Conference (UEC) action on Sunday as the Nittany Lions won game one by the score of 15-6 and followed that up with a 20-4 victory in game two at Huntingdon Field.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Gallaudet scored a pair of unearned runs in the top half of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.  However, Abington responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take control of the lead.  Laura VanHoeven and Jenna Gorman each drove in runs in the inning.
 
* Abington broke the game wide open in the second.  The Nittany Lions began the inning with three straight singles.  VanHoeven drove a run in on a fielder's choice and then Megan Tomoney followed with a two-run single.  The next three runs scored in the inning resulted in a pair of by the Bison as the lead increased to 9-2.
 
* Gallaudet added a pair of runs in the top half of the third to cut into the deficit.  A two-run single by Jade Dawson made the score 9-4.
 
* Abington added a single run in the third when Grace Renninger led the inning off with a triple down the left field line.  She would then score on a groundout by Abbi Long as Abington increased its lead to 10-4.
 
*  The Nittany Lions' offense added another five runs in the bottom of the fourth.  VanHoeven and Tomoney each drove in a run, while Hailey Gamble came through with a two-run triple to make the score 15-4. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Renninger went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate as she tied her season-high with four hits in the game.  She also scored four times setting a new career-high. 
 
* Gamble also went a perfect 4-for-4, including a triple and a double.  She also scored twice and drove in two runs.
 
* VanHoeven tied her career-high with three RBI in the game as she finished 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored.  In the pitching circle, VanHoeven improved to 3-0 in a complete game performance.
* Tomoney finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI.
 
* For Gallaudet, Caitlyn Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Dawson finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* A six-run second inning set the tone for the game for Abington.  The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never looked back.  Gretchen Yanss came through with a two-run triple in the inning and Tomoney drove in a pair of runs late in the inning with a single down the left field line.
 
* The offensive momentum carried on into the third inning when Abington erupted for 12 runs on 12 hits to grab an 18-0 lead.  The Nittany Lions had 17 batters come to bat in the inning with six different batters driving in runs.  Elyssa Bohr highlighted the inning with an inside the park home run to right field that scored two runs.  Prior to that, Tomoney drove in two runs on a triple and then scored on a triple by Gamble. 
 
* Gallaudet broke up the shutout bid with a run in the fourth inning.  The Bison then scored three runs in the fifth inning.
 
* Abington scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to hit the 20-run mark for the second time this season.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Tomoney drove in a season-high four runs; one shy of her career-high.  She finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored.
 
* Bohr had a career game at the plate as she finished a perfect 4-for-4 with a career-high four runs.  Her third inning inside the park home run marked the first of her career.  Bohr (8-3) also earned the win after throw five innings in a complete game effort.  She held the Bison to two earned runs on six hits while striking out three batters.
 
* Yanss went 4-for-4 at the plate to set a career-high with four hits.  She also set a career-high with three runs and tied her career-high with two RBI.
 
* Each player on Abington that had an at-bat recorded at least one hit in the game and drove in at least one run.
 
* For Gallaudet, Elaine Swecker went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
Home Sweet Home
Abington is now 10-0 at the friendly confines of Huntingdon Field this season.  The 10 wins thus far are the most home victories since the team won 14 home games in 2013.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 31st and 32nd meetings between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 27-5 versus the Bison in that span and have won the last six games in the series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 15 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Wells College in an United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
