Abington Shuts Down Wells in DH Sweep



Aurora, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington softball team picked up a pair of shutout victories at Wells College in United East Conference (UEC) action on Friday afternoon.  The Nittany Lions won game one by the score of 30-0 setting a season-high for runs scored in a game.  Game two was called in the third inning with Abington ahead, 12-0. As a result, the game will go down as a 7-0 win for Abington with no statistics from the game going towards the season total.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Mary Kate Smith set the tone for the opener as she led the game off with a solo home run as Abington went on to score 11 runs in the first inning.  Maddie Duffy drove in three runs in the inning as she cleared the bases with a three-run double.  The Nittany Lions tallied seven hits in the first inning and took advantage of four errors by Wells.
 
* Megan Tomoney highlighted a nine-run second inning as she connected on her second home run of the season with a grand slam homer. 
 
* Abington went on to score seven runs in the third and two more in the fourth before capping the scoring with the team's 30th run in the fifth inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Abbi Long had a career day as she finished a perfect 7-for-7 at the plate with five runs and four RBI.  Her seven hits were one hit shy of the NCAA Division III record for most hits in a game. 
 
* Tomoney drove in a career-high seven RBI as she finished 2-for-5 with three runs scored. 
 
* Duffy set a career-high with four RBI as she went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs.
 
* Smith scored a career-high six runs after going 3-for-4 with two walks.  She also drove in three runs and recorded her first career home run with her lead off blast in the first.
 
* Sophomore Elyssa Bohr (9-3) earned her team-leading ninth win of the season.  She struck out a career-high nine batters in the five-inning complete game shutout.  Bohr also went 2-for-6 at the plate with three runs and one RBI.
 
* For Wells, Shanyce Gonzalez went 2-for-2 at the plate.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th and 12th meetings between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2019 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 12-0 versus the Express in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 19 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Penn College in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.  Abington was supposed to face Morrisville State College tomorrow but due to inclement weather the doubleheader has been postponed with a make up date still to be determined.
