Abington Powers Past Muhlenberg, 24-9

Jenkintown, Pa. – Zach Morales and Chase Swain each drove in six runs as the Penn State Abington baseball team defeated Muhlenberg College by the score of 24-9 in a non-conference contest on Tuesday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.

How It Happened
 
* A 10 run fourth inning for Abington turned out to be the difference in the game.  Leading 7-6 after Muhlenberg scored four runs in the top of the inning, the Nittany Lions extended their lead to 17-6 by innings end.  Ryan McCarty set the tone for the inning as he led off with a solo home run; his second of the game.  McCarty previously homered in the first inning. 
 
* Montana Milward had a two-run single in the fourth.  Back-to-back walks by Jaden Himmelreich and Swain forced in a run.  Eric Rollins was credited with an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Two batters later, Tim Petrucelli was also hit with a pitch to force in yet another run.  The big blast in the inning followed as Morales cleared the bases with a grand slam home run over the left field fence to cap the scoring and give Abington an 11-run lead at 17-6.
 
* The Abington offense added seven more runs in the sixth inning with Swain and McCarty coming through with run scoring hits that drove in a pair of runs each.    Himmelreich and Morales reach had an RBI in the inning after being walked with the bases loaded on both occasions.
 
* Muhlenberg scored a run in the first, but Abington tied the game in the bottom of the inning with McCarty's first home run of the game.  Later in the inning Morales gave the Nittany Lions the lead with a run scoring hit.
 
* The Mules tied the game at 2-2 in the second, but once again Abington responded.  In the bottom of the second, Swain delivered a three-run home run to left-center field to make the score 5-2.  The Nittany Lions scored twice in the third to increase their lead to 7-2.  Sean Doherty and Milward each drove in a run in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* McCarty's two home runs increased his Division III lead to 18 on the year.  His season total is also tied for third most home runs between all three NCAA Divisions.  McCarty finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs and four RBI.
 
* Swain finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs and a season-high six RBI.  His second inning home run marked his sixth of the season.
 
* Morales has now homered in five of his last seven games.  He finished the day 4-for-4 setting career-highs with four runs and six RBI.  His grand slam in the fourth inning marked his seventh long ball of the season.
 
* Himmelreich came to the plate five times and walked all five times coming one walk shy of tying the NCAA Division III record for most walks in a single game.  He scored three times while reaching base five times. 
 
* For Muhlenberg, Jonathan Toth finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.  Nick Belli also drove in a pair of runs as he finished 2-for-2 with a run. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth meeting between Abington and Muhlenberg since the start of the 2017 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 4-1 versus the Mules in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 15 as the Nittany Lions open a three-game United East series at Penn College.  The single game is set for 3 p.m. and the series will conclude on Saturday, April 16 with a doubleheader.
