Abington Edged by Penn College in United East Doubleheader

Williamsport, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team dropped a pair of 1-0 decisions at Penn College on Wednesday afternoon in United East Conference (UEC) at Elm Park.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* An infield single by Maddie Hurst in the bottom of the fifth inning turned out to be the game-winning run for the Wildcats.  With two outs in the inning, Hurst beat out an infield hit to score Ivvy Morder for the game's first and only run. 
 
* In the top half of the fifth, Jenna Gorman led the inning off with a single for Abington.  She moved into scoring position two batters later after a sacrifice bunt by Gretchen Yanss.  The inning ended with Gorman stranded at second base. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Elyssa Bohr (9-4) received the hard-luck loss as she pitched a complete-game six innings allowing just one unearned run.  She finished the game with six strikeouts. 
 
* Gorman and Drew Liss accounted for Abington's two hits in the game.
 
* Penn College's Kyla Benner (11-3) picked up her 11th win of the season as she struck out 17 batters in seven innings of work.  Hurst went 2-for-3 for the Wildcats with an RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, pitching once again took center stage.  Penn College scored the game's lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning.  A sacrifice fly by Margaret Mangene scored Madison Shaffer.
 
* Earlier in the game, Abington had a chance to take an early lead.  Hailey Gamble led the inning off with a double to left field.  She then advanced to third on a groundout but was left stranded by innings end.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Yanss (3-6) was the pitcher of record for the Nittany Lions with another hard-luck defeat.  She went six innings allowing just one run on four hits.  She finished the game with a career-high seven strikeouts.
 
* For the Wildcats, Mackenzie Weaver (10-2) improved to 10-2 on the year as she recorded the one-hit shutout to go along with 14 strikeouts. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the ninth and 10th meetings between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2017 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 1-9 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 22 as the Nittany Lions hit the road to face Lancaster Bible College in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m.
