Abington Blasts Five Homers in Win Over Chargers

Jenkintown, Pa. –  In the first of a three-game series with visiting Lancaster Bible College, the Penn State Abington baseball team hit five home runs on its way to a 16-3 victory over the first place Chargers in United East Conference (UEC) action on Friday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.

How It Happened
 
* Abington blew the game wide open within the first inning of play.  Chase Swain and Justin Fogel opened the inning with back-to-back singles.  Ryan McCarty followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in the game's first run.  From there, four home runs accounted for the Nittany Lions' next six runs in the inning.
 
* Tim Petrucelli hit the team's first home run of the inning; a two-run shot over the center field fence. Zach Morales followed with a blast to left field to make the score 4-0.  Three batters later Andrew Lastowka connected on two-run homer to center field and was followed by a Matt Crisci solo home run to record back-to-back home runs for the second time in the inning.
 
* Morales increased Abington's lead to 8-0 in the second with a run scoring single before the team added four more runs in the third.  McCarty cleared the bases with a grand slam to record Abington's fifth home run of the game. After three innings Abington held a 12-0 advantage.
 
* Lancaster Bible broke up the shutout in the sixth inning when Ethan Varricchione hit a solo home run.  The Chargers scored again in the eighth with another solo home run from Brian Coburn to make the score 12-2. 
 
* Abington responded with four runs in the bottom of the eighth with McCarty highlighting the inning with a run scoring double after Fogel tripled to left field.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of a two-out error by the Chargers that resulted in three unearned runs late in the inning. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* McCarty's third inning grand slam marked his 14th home run of the season which is now tops in NCAA Division III.  He finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and six RBI; one shy of his season and career-high.
 
* Greg Wiley (2-0) earned his second win of the season as he went seven strong innings limited the Chargers to just three hits while allowing one run. 
 
* In his first game of the season, Fogel went 3-for-4 with a career-high four runs scored.  He also tripled in the eighth inning.

* Swain also collected three hits on the day as he finished 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs.
 
* Morales tied his career-high with his third home run of the season in the first inning. 
 
* For Lancaster Bible, Coburn finished the game 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 19th meeting between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 16-3 versus the Chargers in the all-time series and have won five of the last six match ups.
 
Next Up
Abington and Lancaster Bible will resume the series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Alverthorpe Park.  Game one is set for 12 p.m.
