Abington Splits United East Doubleheader at LBC

Lancaster, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at Lancaster Bible College on Friday afternoon.  The Nittany Lions dropped game by the score of 4-2 but bounced back to salvage the doubleheader with a 10-2 triumph in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* In the opener, Abington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  Freshman Grace Renninger drove in a pair of runs with a two-out base hit to right-center field. 
 
* The Chargers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when Alyssa Hamilton led the inning off with a solo home run.
 
* In the bottom of the third, Lancaster Bible scored three times to take a 4-2 advantage. Chloe King came through with a two-run single to give the Chargers the lead. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)

* Renninger went 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Nittany Lions.
 
* Sophomore Elyssa Bohr (9-5) was the pitcher of record as she went five innings.  She allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out five. 
 
* For the Chargers, King went 2-for-3 with two RBI.  Alyssa Hamilton picked up the win with the seven- inning complete game performance. 
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, Abington struck first again with a first inning run.  With the bases loaded, junior Jenna Gorman was hit by a pitch and as a result forced home a run to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead.
 
* In the bottom of the first the Chargers responded with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead. 
 
* Abington regained the lead in the second thanks to a four-run inning.  The Nittany Lions scored all four runs with two outs.  Freshman Hailey Gamble drove in the first run with an infield hit to the pitcher to tie the game.  Junior Megan Tomoney followed with run scoring double to give Abington the lead for good at 3-2.  After an error by the Chargers made the score 4-2, Gorman came through with a single to right field to score Tomoney extending the lead to three runs.
 
* The Abington offense stayed hot in the third when five more hits led to three additional runs.  Freshman Drew Liss drove in the first run with a triple to right field and would score on a base hit up the middle by senior Mary Kate Smith.  Later in the inning, Tomoney recorded another RBI to make the score 8-2 as freshman Abbi Long scored on a single through the right side.
 
* Abington capped the scoring with two runs in the fourth inning taking advantage of two errors by the Chargers.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Sophomore Laura VanHoeven (4-0) improved to 4-0 on the year after holding the Chargers to just two runs on four hits through a complete five-inning game.  VanHoeven finished the game with a season-high eight strikeouts.
 
* Gorman and Tomoney each went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in game two. 
 
* Smith finished 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI. 
 
* Yanss also scored twice as she went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
 
* For the Chargers, Phoebe Clemens and Adalyn Steiner each drove in a run.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th and 26th meetings between Abington and Lancaster Bible since the start of the 2014 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 19-7 versus the Chargers in that span.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday as the Nittany Lions head to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet University in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 1 p.m.
