Abington Sweeps Gallaudet; Clinches Postseason Berth

Washington, D.C. – The Penn State Abington softball team completed the season sweep against Gallaudet University after defeating the Bison, 8-1 and 10-2, on Saturday afternoon in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader at the GU Softball Complex.  As a result, the Nittany Lions officially clinched a postseason spot in next month's conference tournament.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Abbi Long drove in a run in the first inning and fellow freshman Drew Liss had a run scoring double in the second inning to give Abington a 2-0 lead.
 
* Gallaudet got a run back in the bottom of the second off a hit by Anya Pothorski to make the score 2-1.
 
* Abington added a pair of runs in each of the next two innings to increase its lead even more.  In the third, junior Jenna Gorman drove in two runs with a two-out triple. In the next inning, Liss delivered a run scoring double and later scored on a single by junior Megan Tomoney.
 
* The Nittany Lions a pair of insurance runs in the seventh.  Liss collected her third RBI of the game with a triple before scoring on a sacrifice bunt by senior Mary Kate Smith
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Freshman Gretchen Yanss (4-6) had plenty of run support to collect her fourth win of the season.  Yanss held the Gallaudet offense to just one run on six hits in the complete game performance.  She also struck out five batters. Offensively, Yanss went 1-for-4 at the plate with two runs.
 
* Liss went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate as she recorded two doubles, one triple, two runs and three RBI; one shy of her career-high.
 
* Smith also had multiple hits in the game as she finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
 
* For Gallaudet, Pothorski and Danyeal Davis each went 2-for-3.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington scored two first inning runs on wild pitches and scored on an error in the third to lead 3-0. 
 
* The Nittany Lion offense erupted for 10 runs in the fourth to put away the Bison in five innings.  Tomoney highlighted the inning with a three-run triple. 
 
* The Bison scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth.  Kate Lorenzo had a run scoring hit in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)

* Sophomore Laura VanHoeven (5-0) picked up her second win in as many days to improve to 5-0 on the year.  She went four innings allowing just two runs on four hits while striking out three batters. 
 
* Long finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a game-high three runs. 
 
* Tomoney went 1-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
 
* Freshman Grace Renninger went 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
 
* For Gallaudet, Emma Giuntoli finished 2-for-2 with a run scored.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 33rd and 34th meetings between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 29-5 versus the Bison in that span and have won the last eight games in the series.
 
Postseason Picture
Abington officially clinched a postseason spot with its two wins today against the Bison.  The Nittany Lions are currently fourth in the United East standings. Abington has now qualified for the postseason every year since 2013 with the exception to 2020 when the then NEAC Tournament was canceled due to Covid-19 pandemic.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Berks in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
