Abington Sweeps Wells to Increase Win Streak to Eight

Aurora, N.Y. – The Penn State Abington baseball team increased its season long winning streak to eight straight games after defeating Wells College in a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.  The Nittany Lions took game one by the score of 18-3 and closed out the three-game series with a 16-4 victory in game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington jumped out to a 4-0 lead after its first at-bats of the game.  Junior Sean Doherty highlighted the opening inning with a two-run double.
 
* Wells grabbed a run in the bottom of the first to make the score 4-1, but in the second the Nittany Lions struck big again.  Sophomore Justin Fogel connected on a three-run homer to increase the lead to 7-1.
 
* After a run in the third, Abington added a pair in the fourth.  Senior Ryan McCarty led the inning off with a solo home run for his 22nd long ball of the season.  Later in the inning Doherty drove in sophomore Tim Petrucelli who doubled after McCarty's home run.
 
* Abington added five more runs in the fifth with Doherty recording his second two-run double of the game.  The Nittany Lions tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning for good measure as their lead swelled to 18-3.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Doherty drove in a career-high five runs after going 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles.
 
* McCarty finished the game 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI.  His third inning home run marked his 22nd of the season.
 
* Fogel went 2-for-5 with three runs and three RBI to go along with his third home run of the season.
 
* Freshman Chase Swain collected four hits in the game finishing 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Senior Jaden Himmelreich (5-2) went the distance as he picked up fifth victory of the season.  He held Wells to just three runs on five hits while setting a career-high in strikeouts with nine.
 
* For Wells, Aaron Izquierdo went 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Abington offense continued where it left off in game one.  The Nittany Lions opened the game with three straight doubles as the team went on to hit five in the inning.  Himmelreich drove in a pair of runs with the fifth and final double of the inning.  By inning's end, Abington led 7-0.
 
* Abington made it 8-0 when senior Zach Morales homered in the second inning.  The offense added three runs in the fifth with junior Matt Crisci connecting on a two-run home run.  Abington scored three more times in the sixth to increase its lead to 14-3. 
 
* Abington tacked on single runs in the eighth and ninth innings.  Fogel capped the scoring with a solo home run in the ninth marking his second of the day.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Fogel went 3-for-6 with three runs and three RBI as he finished the doubleheader a combined 5-for-11 with six runs and six RBI.  He also had a pair of home runs for his third and fourth of the season.
 
* Morales went 2-for-3 with two runs and three RBI while recording his ninth home run of the season.
 
* McCarty collected a pair of hits (2-4) while scoring twice and driving in two runs.
 
* Sophomore Eric Rollins went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Crisci also had a pair of hits (2-4) including his third home run of the season.  He scored twice and drove in a pair of runs in the process.
 
* Senior Bill Trimble (5-2) earned his fifth win of the season after five innings of work.  He held Wells to just three runs on eight hits while striking out four batters.
 
* For Wells, Izquierdo went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Juan Correa finished 3-for-4 with a run.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th and 11th meetings between Abington and Wells since the start of the 2018 season.  The Nittany Lions are 11-0 versus the Express in the all-time series.
 
26 Wins and Counting
Abington recorded wins number 25 and 26 with the doubleheader sweep today.  The 26 wins thus far this season are the most in the program's Division III era.  It's the most wins in a season since the 2018 team won 25 games. 
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, April 26 as the Nittany Lions hit the road to face Delaware Valley University in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
