Abington Wins 9th Straight; Rallies to Defeat Immaculata

Jenkintown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team extended its season-long winning streak to nine straight games after defeating Immaculata University, 15-9, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday afternoon at Alverthorpe Park.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored seven runs in the bottom of the third inning to overcome a 7-1 deficit.  The Nittany Lions started the inning with three straight singles to load the bases.  From there, the team managed seven runs off seven hits in the inning with six different batters driving in runs.  Junior Sean Doherty highlighted the inning with a two-run double which gave Abington an 8-7 lead.
 
* Immaculata tied the game at 8-8 with a run in the fourth and then regained the lead in the top half of the fifth with a run scoring single by Joey Sacco.
 
* Abington tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the fifth after Doherty beat out an infield hit to third base and as a result scored sophomore Justin Fogel.
 
* In the sixth, the Nittany Lions broke the 9-9 tie and took the lead for good with back-to-back home runs.  Freshman Chase Swain led the inning off with an infield hit to shortstop and Fogel followed with a two-run home run to make the score 11-9.  Senior Ryan McCarty followed with a solo home run to increase the Nittany Lions' lead to 12-9.
 
* Abington added a run in the seventh and two runs to in the eighth. 
 
* Immaculata jumped out to an early 7-1 lead. Back-to-back home runs by Isaiah Payton and Steven Theisen accounted for the four-run second inning. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* McCarty increased his Division III lead to 23 for most home runs in the nation.  McCarty has the second most home runs across all three divisions.  He finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI to go along with three walks.
 
* Fogel's sixth inning bomb marked his fifth of the season and his third in as many games.  He went 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI. 
 
* Doherty drove in a team-high three runs as he finished 3-for-6 with a run scored. 
 
* Senior Zach Morales finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Lastowka finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. 
 
* Swain also had multiple hits in the game as he went 2-for-6 with two runs.
 
* Sophomore Mitchell Carmody (2-0) was the pitcher of record for the Nittany Lions.  He pitched two scoreless innings in relief allowing just two hits.  McCarty followed by closing out the final three innings to earn his third save of the season. 
 
* For Immaculata, Payton led the team with three RBI after his second inning three-run homer.  Sacco and Steven Theisen each drove in a pair of runs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Immaculata since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-5 versus the Mighty Macs.

Abington returns to action on Thursday, April 28 as the Nittany Lions travel to face Delaware Valley University in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
