Abington Extends Win Streak to 10; Defeats DelVal in Extras

Doylestown, Pa. – Senior Jaden Himmelreich came through with a two-run double in the top half of the 11th inning to break an 8-8 tie as the Penn State Abington baseball team went on to defeat Delaware Valley University, 12-8, in a non-conference contest on Thursday afternoon at Frank Wolfgang Field.  The victory extended the Nittany Lions' season-long winning streak to 10 straight games.

How It Happened
 
* With two runners in scoring position and one out in the top half of the 11th inning, Himmelreich stepped to the plate a delivered a double down the right field line scoring juniors Sean Doherty and Matt Crisci to break an 8-8 tie.  Freshman Chase Swain followed with a base hit to score Himmelreich to make the score 11-8.  Two batters later, senior Ryan McCarty drove in Swain for the team's 12th run with a single up the middle.
 
* The game went into extra innings after DelVal rallied to tie the score at 8-8 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth.  Jonathan Drews came through with the game-tying hit for the Aggies.
 
* Abington scored the game's first runs with a four-run third inning.  Senior Zach Morales highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
 
* The Aggies responded with five runs in the bottom of the third to grab the lead at 5-4. 
 
* The lead was short-lived as the Nittany Lions lit up the scoreboard with three runs in the fourth.  Morales once again drove in a pair with a single down the left field line scoring McCarty and sophomore Justin Fogel to make the score 7-5.
 
* Abington tacked on a run in the top half of the sixth with a sacrifice fly by McCarty. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Morales recorded a game-high four RBI as he finished the game 3-for-5 with a double.
 
* McCarty, the nation's top-hitter with a .525 batting average, went 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. He also walked twice in the game.
 
* Swain tied his season-high with four runs scored as he went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a walk.
 
* Himmelreich went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.  He also reached base twice via base on balls.
 
* Sophomore Jamie Burkhart (2-0) was perfect in relief for the Nittany Lions.  Entering with one out in the ninth, Burkhart retired eight straight batters in his 2.2 innings of relief to earn his second win of the season.  He struck out a season-high four batters. 
 
* For DelVal, Drews went 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Kenneth Tunison finished 1-for-5 with two runs and three RBI.

Today marked the first-ever meeting between Abington and Delaware Valley.
 
Streaking Lions
Abington's 10-game winning streak is the team's first double-digit winning streak since the 2018 season when the team won 13 straight games.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday as the Nittany Lions begin their final United East Conference series of the season versus Gallaudet University.  Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Alverthorpe Park.
