Abington Sweeps Mustangs in United East Action

Morrisville, N.Y. –  The Penn State Abington softball team completed the season sweep of Morrisville State College with a pair of United East Conference (UEC) victories on Wednesday afternoon at the Morrisville Softball Field.  The Nittany Lions took game one, 17-6 in five innings, and then finished the doubleheader with a 17-5 triumph in a six-inning game two.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Trailing 5-2 after the first inning, Abington tallied four runs in the second to take the lead.  Freshman Grace Renninger highlighted the inning with a three-run home run to give the Nittany Lions a 6-5 lead.  Prior to Renninger's homer, freshman Drew Liss drove a run with a base hit.
 
* Abington added three more runs in the third to increase its lead to 9-5.  Liss came through with a two-run double and then scored on a base hit by Renninger. 
 
* The Abington offense stayed hot as the team put the game out of reach with a five-run eighth inning.  Junior Megan Tomoney cleared the bases with a three-run double before fellow junior Maddie Duffy recorded a two-run single. 
 
* Morrisville scored five runs in the first inning as Jade Atherton hit a three-run homer for the Mustangs.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
*  Renninger's second inning home run marked her first of her collegiate career.  She finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBI tying her career-high.
 
* Liss recorded her first four-hit game of her career as she went 4-for-5 at the plate with three runs and three RBI.
 
* Junior Jenna Gorman finished 3-for-4 with a run and two RBI, while freshman Callie Chambers finished the game 2-for-3, including a triple, three runs and an RBI.
 
* Freshman Gretchen Yanss (5-7) earned her fifth win of the season with the complete five-inning performance.
 
* For the Mustangs, Atherton went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Toni Baker finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In the night cap, the Nittany Lions found themselves trailing 4-0 after two innings.  However, Abington took advantage of three Mustang errors in the third inning leading to four runs to tie the game.  Gamble highlighted the inning with a two-run double. 
 
* Abington grabbed the lead for good in the fifth as the Nittany Lions plated seven runs in the inning.  Gamble drove in another pair of runs with a two-out single with the bases loaded.  Abington scored all seven runs with two outs in the inning.
 
* In the sixth, the offense continued its production as Abington scored six more times.  Gamble recorded three more RBI with a three-run homer to increase her RBI total to seven in the game.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Gamble had a career-game as she finished 4-for-5 to go along with three runs and a career-high seven RBI.  Her sixth inning home run marked her second of the season and second in her last three games.  She finished the doubleheader with eight RBI.
 
* Gorman went 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. 
 
* Duffy also had multiple hits in the game as she finished 2-for-4 with two runs.
 
* Sophomore Elyssa Bohr (11-5) picked up her team-leading 11th victory of the season after going the full six innings.  She finished the game with eight strikeouts; one shy of her season and career-high.
 
* For Morrisville, Jessica Burlew went 3-for-3 with three runs.  Kennedy Kirby finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fifth and sixth meetings between Abington and Morrisville since the start of the 2021 season.  The Nittany Lions are a perfect 6-0 versus the Mustangs in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, April 29 as the Nittany Lions host Penn College in a United East doubleheader.  Game one is set for 3 p.m. at Huntingdon Field.
