Abington Wins Opener, Splits DH with Wildcats

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split a United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader against visiting Penn College on Friday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  The Nittany Lions took the opener by the score of 6-3 before the Wildcats took game two in five innings, 13-3.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Freshman Drew Liss led the inning off with a single and senior Mary Kate Smith followed with double. A sacrifice fly by freshman Hailey Gamble gave Abington a 1-0 lead.  Junior Megan Tomoney then scored Smith with a base hit to left field.  Two batters later, freshman Gretchen Yanss helped her own cause with a double to right center to score Tomoney.
 
* In the fifth, Penn College cut the deficit down to one run with a pair of runs.  However, Abington countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to increase its lead to 6-2.  With the bases loaded the Nittany Lions recorded three straight run scoring hits with sophomore Laura VanHoeven, junior Maddie Duffy and freshman Grace Renninger all driving in runs.
 
* The Wildcats added an unearned run in the sixth inning to make the score 6-3. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Yanss (6-7) earned her sixth win of the season after going four innings allowing just one earned run.  She finished the game with seven strikeouts.  Offensively, Yanss went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
* VanHoeven picked up the three-inning save holding the Wildcats to one unearned on three hits.  She entered in the fifth inning with one runner on and quickly retired the first two batters before closing out the inning.  She finished the game with three strikeouts.
 
* Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate falling a home run shy of the cycle. 
 
* Tomoney finished 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. 
 
* For the Wildcats, Olivia Hemstock went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. 
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* In game two, the Wilcats jumped out to an early lead with a four-run inning.  The first three batters reached off singles.  After a strikeout, Margaret Mangene drove in a pair with a base hit.  MacKenzie Weaver then followed with a run scoring hit of her own.
 
* Abington got a run back in the bottom of the inning off a run scoring hit by Tomoney.
 
* Penn College added a run in the second to make the score 5-1, but Abington answered in the third with a pair of runs to cut the lead to 5-3.  A two-out error led to two runs for the Nittany Lions.
 
* The Wildcats went on to score three times in the fourth to increase their lead to 8-3.  In the fifth, they added another five runs to take a double-digit lead at 13-3.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
*  Smith tallied another three hits as she went 3-for-3 with two runs.  She finished the doubleheader 6-for-7 with three runs.
 
* For the Wildcats, Weaver (13-2) won her 13th game of the season after going five full innings.  She finished with nine strikeouts.  At the plate, Weaver went 2-for-3 with four RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 11th and 12th meetings between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2017 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 2-10 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series
 
New D-III Program Wins Record
Today's game one victory marked the team's 23rd victory of the season setting a new single season record for most wins in the program's Division III era which began in 2011.  The Nittany Lions previously won 22 games in 2014 and 2015.
 
Next Up
Abington will wrap up the regular season on Saturday as the Nittany Lions host Penn State Harrisburg in the United East finale.  Game one is set for 1 p.m.  Prior to the game, Abington will recognize its senior class in part of Senior Day festivities.
