Abington Splits United East DH with Harrisburg on Senior Day

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington softball team split the final United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader of the season against visiting Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday afternoon at Huntingdon Field.  Abington won game one by the score of 7-5, before Harrisburg finished the doubleheader with a 13-5 victory in game number two.  Prior to the game, Abington honored senior Mary Kate Smith who was competing in her final home game in part of Senior Day festivities.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
* Abington scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to lead 3-0 early in the game.  Junior Maddie Duffy and freshman Grace Renninger each drove in runs in the inning.
 
* The score remained 3-0 until the fifth inning when Harrisburg finally got on the board.  Steph Reider recorded a two-run double to make the score 3-2.
 
* In the bottom of the fifth, Abington got both those runs back thanks to a run scoring triple by freshman Hailey Gamble.  She would go on to score later in the inning on a wild pitch which extended the lead to 5-2.
 
* In the sixth, Harrisburg tied the game after totaling three runs in the inning to make the score 5-5.  However, in the bottom of the inning Smith came through with some Senior Day magic as she delivered a two-out single to center field scoring freshman Abbi Long and Renninger to give Abington a 7-5 lead and eventual win.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* Smith finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Duffy went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, while freshman Gretchen Yanss recorded a 2-for-3 day with a run.
 
* Sophomore Laura VanHoeven (6-0) received the win after pitching 1.1 innings of relief.  She limited Harrisburg to just one hit as she picked up her sixth win of the season.
 
For Harrisburg, Reider went 1-for-3 with a game-high three RBI.  Delaney Nevius and Rylee Tineri each had a pair of hits in the game.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Abington trailed 5-0 entering the bottom of the third inning and when the inning finally came to an end the score was tied 5-5.  Junior Megan Tomoney drew a bases loaded walk to drive in the team's first run of the game.  Junior Jenna Gorman followed with a single to center field that plated two more runs.   Two batters later, Duffy drove in Tomoney and Gorman to tie the game with a triple to right-center field.
 
* Harrisburg would go on to score four runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-5 lead.  Three different players drove in runs in the inning for Harrisburg.  The visitors followed with another four-run inning in the sixth with four run-scoring hits in the inning.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* Duffy drove in a pair of runs going 1-for-3 at the plate with a triple.
 
* Gorman finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
 
* Harrisburg's Sam Weaver went 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.  Reider also drove in three runs as she finished 2-for-5.  Maddy Lehigh went 4-for-5 with two RBI.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 19th and 20th meetings between Abington and Harrisburg dating back to the 2011 season.  After today's doubleheader split, the all-time series is tied at 10-10.
