Abington Sweeps Gallaudet on Senior Day; McCarty Ties D-III Record with Four Home Runs in Game Two

Jenkintown, Pa. – Senior Ryan McCarty tied the NCAA Division III single game record for most home runs as he belted four in game two as the Penn State Abington baseball team recorded the three-game sweep over Gallaudet University in the final United East Conference (UEC) doubleheader of the season.  The Nittany Lions won game one, 12-1, and took game two by the score of 21-9. Prior to the game, Abington recognized its six seniors that were competing in their final home doubleheader in part of Senior Day festivities at Alverthorpe.

How It Happened (Game 1)
 
*  In the opener, Abington scored three runs in the first and blew the game open with a seven-run second inning.  Junior Matt Crisci connected on a two-run homer for his fourth home run of the season to open the scoring in the second.  Sophomores Andrew Lastowka and Christian Reyes each had back-to-back two-run doubles later in the inning.
 
* Abington provided plenty of run support for senior Jaden Himmelreich (6-2) who picked up his sixth victory of the season.  He went the distance holding the Bison to just one run over seven innings of work.  He finished with a career-high 13 strikeouts. 
 
* The Nittany Lions added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 12-0 before the Bison broke up the shutout with a run in the sixth.
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 1)
 
* McCarty finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
 
* Junior Sean Doherty and Lastowka each went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI.
 
* Crisci and Reyes each had multiple hits in the game.  Crisci finished 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Reyes went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI.
 
* For Gallaudet, Salvador Diaz went 2-for-2, while Ben Meyer went 2-for-3 at the plate.
 
How It Happened (Game 2)
 
* Gallaudet scored twice in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead, however Abington responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-2 lead and from there never looked back.  McCarty connected on his first of four home runs in the game.  A three-run shot in the first highlighted the four-run inning.
 
* McCarty led the fourth inning off with a solo home run and then homered again in the fifth inning with featured back-to-back home runs by sophomore Justin Fogel and then McCarty.  McCarty's fourth home run came in the seventh inning which tied the Division III record for most home runs in a single game.  McCarty nearly hit his fifth home run of game in the eighth when the ball hit midway up the fence on a fly resulting in a double.
 
* Abington scored eight runs in the second to take a commanding 12-2 lead. 
 
Inside the Box Score (Game 2)
 
* McCarty finished the game 6-for-7 with four runs and a career-high nine RBI.  His four home runs increased his D-III lead to 27 on the year.  With his 10 RBI between the two games, McCarty surpassed 200 RBI for his career and now has 204. 
 
* Fogel went 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, including two home runs in the game.  He now has seven homers on the year.
 
* Freshman Anthony Bencardino also homered in the game for his sixth home run of the season. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI.
 
* Junior Josh Baar also went deep for his fourth home run of the season in the second inning.  He finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
 
* Freshman Chase Swain finished the game 4-for-6 with three runs and an RBI.
 
* Senior Bill Trimble (6-2) earned his sixth win of the season after going five innings and striking out three batters. 
 
* Senior Gregg Sywulak struck out three batters in two innings of relief.
 
* For Gallaudet, Diaz went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI.

As a team, Abington hit eight home runs in game two setting a single game program record for most home runs in the team's D-III era. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 25th and 26th meetings between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011 season.  Abington is now 21-5 verus the Bison in the all-time series.
