Abington Defeats Lancaster Bible; Advances in United East Tournament

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington baseball team hit six home runs, including a pair by sophomore Tim Petrucelli as the second-seeded Nittany Lions defeated third-seeded Lancaster Bible College, 18-6, on day one of the United East Tournament on Monday afternoon.  Abington will now face top-seeded and host Penn State Harrisburg on Tuesday.  Game time is set for 12 p.m.

How It Happened

* The Abington offense wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard as Petrucelli delivered a three-run home run in the opening inning to give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 lead.

* Lancaster Bible responded with three runs in the top half of the second to tie the game at 3-3.  However, a two-run double by sophomore Justin Fogel gave Abington the lead again at 5-3 in the bottom of the inning.

* The Chargers cut the lead to 5-4 in the third, but the Nittany Lions responded once again.  Sophomore Andrew Lastowka scored junior Sean Doherty with a base hit to make the score 6-4.

* A solo home run by Blake Greenly to lead off the fourth inning made the score 6-5 as the Chargers cut into the Abington lead once more. In the bottom of the fifth, Abington increased its lead to 10-5.  Back-to-back solo home runs by freshman Anthony Bencardino and Lastowka highlighted the inning.

* Abington added a run in the sixth and broke the game wide open in the seventh with a five-run inning.  Senior Ryan McCarty connected on his 28th home run of the season for the inning's first run.  Two batters later fellow senior Zach Morales launched a two-run homer over the right-center field fence.  Later in the inning freshman Chase Swain drove in two runs with a single to left field.  The five-run inning gave Abington a 16-6 lead.

* The Nittany Lions added two more runs in the eighth off the bat of Petrucelli on his second home run of the game.
