Abington Shutouts Griffins in Season Opener; Burns Ties Program Record

 
Gwynedd Valley, Pa. – Junior Grace Burns tied a program record with four goals as the Penn State Abington women's soccer team erupted for seven scores in the 7-0 victory at Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon at GMU Athletic Complex.

How It Happened
 
* Abington wasted no time finding the back of the net as Burns scored the first of her three first-half goals in the eighth minute of action.  She would go on to score again in the 25th minute after a long pass from senior goalkeeper Maria Tunney for a breakaway goal score.  Burns struck again in the 29th minute to give Abington a 3-0 lead.  Freshman Kyrsten Strange found Burns with a long pass from the sideline for her first career assist.
 
* In the second half, sophomore Madison McDowell opened the scoring with the first of her three goals in the half. McDowell made the score 4-0 in the 54th minute before adding a goal in the 59th minute and capping the scoring in the game with a goal in the 79th minute.
 
* Burns tied the school record with her fourth goal of the game in the 76th minute.

* Abington pressured the Griffins all game as the offense fired off 34 shots with 25 on target.
 
* The Nittany Lions held the advantage on corner kicks with a 9-2 margin.
 
* Sophomore Sarah Gibbons registered two assists in the second half helping on the two latter goals by McDowell.
 
* Tunney made a pair of saves in net for the Nittany Lions in the first half. Freshman Rachel Wilfrid entered the game in the second half and made two stops to preserve the combined shutout.
 
* For Gwynedd Mercy, goalkeeper Natalie Gablein made 15 saves. 

 
Goals Times Four
The four goals scored by Burns marked the sixth time in program history that a Nittany Lion has tallied four goals in a game.  The last to do so was McKayla Baum and Michelle Latronica in the 2016 season.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Gwynedd Mercy since the start of the 2018 season. The Nittany Lions are now 2-1-0 versus the Griffins.  Both Abington's victories in the series were via the shutout.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 6 as the Nittany Lions head across town to face Bryn Athyn College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 5 p.m.
