Abington Falls to Cairn in Season Opener

Langhorne, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball dropped its season opener at Cairn University by the score of 3-0 in a non-conference contest on Thursday night at the Mason Activity Center.

How It Happened
 
* A 6-0 run by Cairn late in the first set tied the set at 20-20.  Abington responded with back-to-back points, including a kill by senior Jenny McAnaney to give the Nittany Lions a 22-20 lead. However, the Highlanders followed with four straight points with three kills by Allison Barnes to lead 24-22.  A kill by McAnaney made it a one-point score before Cairn took the set, 25-23, after an error by Abington.
 
* In the second set, the Highlanders once again used a late run to take the set.  Trailing 18-15, Cairn followed with a 7-1 run to pull ahead at 22-19.  Abington cut the deficit down to one twice down the stretch, but the Highlanders manage to grab the final two points of the set for the 25-22 victory.
 
* Cairn took the third set, 25-15, to complete the shutout.  The Highlanders led by as many as 11 points at 20-9 after a 5-0 run and never trailed in the set. 
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* McAnaney led Abington with 13 kills to go along with a team-best 17 digs. 
 
* Freshman Laine Kulpinski paced the offense with a team-high 24 assists while recording double-digit digs with 11.
 
* Freshman Jackie Lewis finished the match with seven digs.
 
* For Cairn, Barnes registered a match-high 15 kills, while Kali Burres-Cheeley finished with 11 kills and 13 digs.  Caroline Conrad totaled a match-high 23 digs to go along with nine kills.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the seventh meeting between Abington and Cairn since the start of the 2014 season.  Abington is now 7-2 versus the Highlanders in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 3 as the Nittany Lions host Centenary University and Valley Forge University in a tri-match.  Abington with face Centenary at 11 a.m. and then take on Valley Forge at 3 p.m.
