Abington Shuts Down Valley Forge in Home Opener

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team made quick work of the visiting Patriots of the University of Valley Forge with a 3-0 triumph in a non-conference match on Saturday afternoon inside the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* The Abington defense held Valley Forge to just four kills the entire match as the Patriots finished the match with a -.283 attack percentage.  The Nittany Lions totaled 24 kills in the match, including a match-high 10 in the second set.
 
* Abington jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first set and never looked back.  Gaby Shreve recorded three straight aces late in the set to give the Nittany Lions a 20-5 advantage.
 
* In the second set an 8-0 run propelled the Nittany Lions to another dominating set.  Abington took advantage of three errors during the run by Valley Forge, while Brooke Beach recorded a pair of aces. Abington closed the set on an 8-0 run to take the set, 25-6.
 
* Abington closed the match with a 25-11 victory in the third set.  The Nittany Lions opened with a 7-1 run but a quick 5-0 surge by the Patriots made it a two-point lead at 7-5.  Leading 8-6, Abington went on a 13-2 run to take another commanding lead in the match.  Brianna Brozo recorded four consecutive aces in the set, while Sara Schrader ripped off three straight as the two combined for seven aces in the third frame.

* As a team Abington recorded 23 aces in the match.  Brozo led the match with five, while Laine Kulpinski and Schrader each had four aces.
 
* Jenny McAnaney finished with a match-high nine kills while making zero attack errors on 13 attempts for a .692 attack percentage.
 
* Brozo finished the match with seven kills to go along with her five aces.
 
* Kulpinski recorded a match-high 22 assists with four aces.
 
* Beach led the Nittany Lions with six digs and had three kills in the match.
 
* For Valley Forge, Vivian Huddleston totaled a pair of kills to go along with five digs.  Telia Robinson led the team with seven digs.

Today marked the 11th meeting between Abington and Valley Forge since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions have won the last five matches in the series.
