Abington Sweeps at Wilson Tri-Match

Chambersburg, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team picked up a pair of victories over Wilson College and King's College on Saturday during a tri-match hosted by the Phoenix at the Gannett Field House.  The Nittany Lions defeated Wilson, 3-1, before coming away with a shutout victory over King's College, 3-0.

How It Happened vs. Wilson
 
* Abington recorded a season-high 30 kills versus the Phoenix.  The Nittany Lions took advantage of 27 attack errors by the host team, including 10 in the first set. In the first set ahead 5-2, Abington ran off seven straight points to take a commanding 12-2 lead.  Five of the seven points were off miscues by Wilson.  Later in the set a run of 8 consecutive points made the score 21-3. 
 
* A 6-0 run to start the second set propelled the Nittany Lions to another easy victory.  Abington led by as many as 13 points in the set at 21-8 before taking the set 25-11.  Abington recorded 10 kills in the set without committing a single error resulting in a .556 attack percentage for the set.
 
* After dropping the third set, 25-21, the Nittany Lions bounced back in the fourth set with a 25-11 victory to seal the match. Abington never trailed in the set despite Wilson coming within three points of the lead at 11-8.  The Nittany Lions closed the match with a 9-0 .
 
Inside the Box Score vs. Wilson
 
* Senior Jenny McAnaney finished with a team-high seven kills in three sets played.  Junior Emma de Mey and freshman Alyssa Flickinger each totaled five kills in three sets. 
 
* Freshman Laine Kulpinski totaled a team-high 17 assists to go along with eight digs.  Kulpinski also had a season-high seven aces.  Sophomore Haley Koch recorded nine assists and four digs.
 
*  Freshman Jackie Lewis set a season-high with 16 digs to lead the team while recording four aces.
 
* As a team Abington, finished with 21 aces marking the third straight match the Nittany Lions recorded 20-plus aces. 
 
* For Wilson, Deah Menedis led the match with nine kills to go along with a match-high 12 digs.  Niki Schussler finished with eight kills and eight digs.
 
 
How It Happened vs. King's
 
* After setting a season-high in kills against Wilson, the Nittany Lions set another season-best with 38 kills against King's.  In the first set the team recorded 13 kills with McAnaney (5) and de Mey (4) combining for nine of them.  Abington trailed 10-5 before scoring five unanswered points to tie the set.  A 10-1 run for the Nittany Lions followed to make the score 20-12.  King's cut the lead to 24-21 before Abington recorded the final point off a Monarchs' attack error.
 
* In the second set, another late run helped the Nittany Lions to a 2-0 lead in the match.  Trailing 9-7, the Nittany Lions used a 6-0 run to grab a 13-9 advantage.  After a Monarchs' point, Abington followed with three more points to lead 16-10. Abington closed out the set scoring eight of the final nine points as de Mey tallied four kills in the final surge.
 
* Abington used yet another late run to close out the match in three sets.  The Nittany Lions fellow behind 12-10 but four straight points capped off by a service ace by de Mey made the score 14-12. After a point by King's, McAnaney bookended a pair of kills between an ace by Lewis as the Nittany Lions increased their lead to 17-13.  King's cut the deficit down to one point twice down the stretch with the latter coming at 23-22.  However, a kill by Flickinger followed by an attack error from King's gave the Nittany Lions the set and match at 25-22.
 
Inside the Box Score vs. King's
 
* McAnaney and de Mey combined for 28 of the team's season-high 38 kills.  McAnaney recorded a season-high 18 kills, while de Mey finished with a season-high as well with 10 kills. 
 
* Kulpinski finished with a match-high 21 assists marking the third time this season that she had 20-plus assists in a match. 
 
* After setting a season-high with 16 digs in the match earlier in the day against Wilson, Lewis topped that mark with 17 digs.  She also added four aces.
 
* For King's, Kayla Sondberg led the team with 10 kills to go along with eight digs.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the fourth meeting between Abington and Wilson since the start of the 2016 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-1 versus the Phoenix in the all-time series.  Against King's, it marked the eighth meeting between the two teams since the 2014 season.  Abington is now 3-5 versus the Monarchs all-time.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Sept. 16 as the Nittany Lions host Bryn Mawr College in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Abington Athletic Building.
