Abington Pushes Win Streak to Eight; Defeats Rosemont, 3-0

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's volleyball team increased its season-long winning streak to eight after defeating visiting Rosemont College, 3-0, in a non-conference contest on Monday night inside the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Ahead 10-9 in the opening set, Abington ripped off three straight kills, including two by freshman Alyssa Flickinger, to jump-start an 8-1 run.  Freshman Jackie Lewis capped the rally with a service ace to give the Nittany Lions a 18-10 lead. Rosemont cut the deficit down to 19-16, but Abington responded by closing the set scoring six of the next seven points.  Back-to-back kills by senior Jenny McAnaney sealed the first set win, 25-17.
 
* Another late run by the Nittany Lions in the second set turned out to be the difference.  With an 11-9 lead, Abington went on a 10-1 run to record its first double-digit lead of the set at 21-10.  Abington took advantage of five errors by Rosemont during the surge.  The Nittany Lions scored the final three points of the set as Flickinger scored the final point with a kill for the 25-15 win.
 
* Rosemont jumped out to a 5-3 lead in the third set, but once again a big run by the Nittany Lions silenced the Ravens.  An 11-0 run gave Abington a 14-5 lead.  After a point by the Ravens, the Nittany Lions tacked on three straight points to grab a double-digit lead at 17-6.  Abington closed out the match scoring the final seven straight points as freshman Laine Kulpinski recorded back-to-back aces on a 25-9 set victory.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Flickinger finished the night with a match-high and season-high nine kills.  She recorded an .800 attack percentage after making just one error on 10 attempts.
 
* Junior Emma de Mey finished with six kills and two aces, while McAnaney added five kills and two aces.
 
* Lewis led the Nittany Lions with 12 digs.
 
* Kulpinski recorded a team-high 15 assists to go along with four aces and nine digs. 
 
* Freshman Sara Schrader finished with a season-high seven digs.
 
* For Rosemont, Rachel Beall led the team with seven kills, while Madeline McCarthy finished with a match-high 13 digs and five kills.  Isabella Reilly had a match-high 18 assists.
 
National Leaders
Abington entered tonight's match as the nation's number one team in aces per set at a rate of 5.62 per set.  The Nittany Lions finished the match with 12 aces and now have 158 on the year. 
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Rosemont since the start of the 2011 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 9-1 versus the Ravens in the all-time series.  Abington has won the last five contests.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 29 as the Nittany Lions host Misericordia University in a non-conference contest.  Match time is set for 7 p.m.
