Abington Wins Home Opener with 5-1 Triumph Over Rosemont

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's soccer team had five different players score on its way to a 5-1 victory over visiting Rosemont College in a non-conference contest at Memorial Field on Thursday afternoon in the team's home opener.

How It Happened
 
* Abington scored all four of its first half goals in an eight-minute span to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.  Junior Grace Burns scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season in the 21st minute to tie the game at 1-1.
 
* In the 26th minute, freshman Nikki Fischbach connected on a shot from the far-left side that deflected off a defender into the back of the net to give Abington a 2-1 lead.  Just over a minute later, sophomore Sarah Gibbons scored an unassisted goal for her first goal of the season to extend the lead to 3-1.
 
* Abington capped the scoring in the opening half in the 28th minute with a goal by freshman Emma Frasca.  Burns and sophomore Madison McDowell were credited with assists on the play.
 
* Coming out of halftime, Abington struck within the first three minutes when freshman Kyrsten Strange scored her first goal of the season after receiving a nice pass from Gibbons.  The goal increased the Nittany Lions' lead to 5-1.
 
* Rosemont scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute.  Sarah Warner tallied her first goal of the season with Sophia Truran and Danielle DiMarco assisting on the play.

* Three players recorded their first collegiate goals for the Nittany Lions, including Frasca, Fischbach, and Strange.
 
* Burns and Gibbons each totaled a game-high five points as both players scored a goal to go along with a pair of assists. 
 
* Goalkeeper Maria Tunney recorded a pair of saves in net for the Nittany Lions after entering in the final minutes of the first half and went on to close out the game.
 
* Abington out-shot Rosemont, 17-9, for the game, including 13-5 in the first half.  The Nittany Lions also held the edge on corner kicks, 6-1.
 
* Rosemont's Marissa Lotierzo finished the game with six saves.
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the third meeting between Abington and Rosemont and the first since 2012.  The Nittany Lions are now 3-0-0 versus the Ravens in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 10 as the Nittany Lions host Wilson College in a non-conference contest.  Game time is set for 2 p.m.
