Abington Drops United East Contest Versus Gallaudet

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team dropped a United East Conference (UEC) contest against visiting Gallaudet University by the score of 72-65 on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Leading 15-12 with less than four minutes to play in the opening quarter, Abington went on a 9-2 run to close out the quarter to grab a double-digit lead.  Senior Isabella Vazquez capped the run with a pair of free throws with :28 seconds remaining in the quarter to make the score 24-14.
 
* In the second quarter, Gallaudet made a run of its own with an 11-0 surge to start the quarter.  The Bison grabbed the lead when Bree Goldstein hit a jumper at the 5:23 mark to make the score 25-24.
 
* Abington regained the lead on back-to-back scores from junior Angela Sanders and sophomore Safara McIntyre.  McIntyre's basket gave the Nittany Lions a 28-25 advantage with 3:26 to play until halftime.  The Bison would tie the score three more times down the stretch of the quarter before taking a 34-32 lead to enter halftime.
 
* Gallaudet scored the first seven points of the third quarter to grab a 41-32 lead by the 6:59 mark.  The Bison increased their lead to double-digits when Rajena Guettler scored a layup basket that made the score 47-37 with 3:29 to play in the quarter. 
 
* Abington cut the deficit to three points after a 9-2 run capped off by a jumper from senior Cassie Tavormina.  However, the Bison went on to close the quarter out with five unanswered points to lead 54-46 entering the fourth.
 
* Gallaudet led the rest of the way and held a 10-point (69-59) lead with 1:35 to play. Abington would go on a mini 6-0 run to come within four points of the lead at 69-65 with :34 seconds left in regulation. However, the Bison extended their lead when Cassidy Perry split a pair of free throws.  Gallaudet grabbed a key offensive team rebound on the miss which led to a Perry jumper to make the score 72-65.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Tavormina led the Nittany Lions with a season-high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.  She also had a career-high five blocks on defense.
 
* Sanders also scored in double-figures as she finished with 18 points, six rebounds and four assists.  She also recorded three steals.
 
* Vazquez and McIntyre each had seven points, six assists and three steals.
 
* For Gallaudet, Perry finished with a team-high 23 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds to record a double-double. She also led the Bison with five assists. 
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 22nd meeting between Abington and Gallaudet since the start of the 2011-12 season.  The Nittany Lions are now 8-14 versus the Bison in the all-time series.

Abington returns to action in one week when the Nittany Lions host Penn College in United East action.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
