Abington Holds Off Wildcats for 73-71 Victory

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team survived a late rally by Penn College as the Nittany Lions came away with a 73-71 victory in United East Conference (UEC) action on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.  The win marked the team's 12th of the season matching last year's win total.

How It Happened
 
* The score read 67-67 on the scoreboard with 3:49 remaining in regulation before a quick 6-0 run by the Nittany Lions made the score 73-67 at the 2:07 mark.  A pair of free throws by senior Brian Randolph III followed by back-to-back baskets by seniors Alex Podolski and Alex Salata III fueled the rally.
 
* Outside a timeout, the Wildcats scored on back-to-back possessions to make the score 73-71 with 1:25 to play.  Abington missed a pair of three-pointers on its next possession before Penn College grabbed a defensive board.  The Wildcats called a timeout with :23 seconds left to set up potentially a game-tying play. 
 
* The Wildcats got a shot off with five seconds on the clock and grabbed the offensive board before calling a timeout.  With 2.7 seconds remaining, the Wildcats inbounded the ball but a three-pointer at the buzzer by Max Jackowsky hit off the rim as Abington held on to the two-point victory.
 
* The game featured 19 different lead changes with Penn College holding the game's largest lead at 34-26 at the four-minute mark of the first half. Abington followed with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 34-34 after a three-pointer by Randolph capped the rally with 2:45 to play until halftime.  The Nittany Lions closed out the final four minutes of the half outscoring the Wildcats, 14-5 to lead 40-39 at halftime.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Randolph and Salata combined for 48 of the team's 73 points as both players finished with 20-plus points.  Salata finished with 25 points (7-14 FG); one shy of his season-high to go along with five rebounds.  It marked his sixth 20-plus scoring performance in his last seven games.  Randolph tied his season-high with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field.  He also led the team with seven rebounds.
 
* Podolski finished the game with nine points, while blocking three shots on defense.
 
* For Penn College, Gavin Barrett led all scorers with 29 points (9-19 FG), while Livingston Cross totaled 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 13th meeting between Abington and Penn College since the start of the 2014-15 season. The Nittany Lions are now 11-2 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Jan. 27 as the Nittany Lions hit the road north to face Morrisville State College in United East action.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
