Abington Pulls Away Late to Defeat Berks, 64-59

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team matched the program record for most wins in a single season since joining NCAA Division III with a 64-59 triumph over visiting Penn State Berks in United East Conference (UEC) action on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* Senior Alex Salata III hit a clutch three-pointer while being fouled with 3:32 to play to give Abington a 53-52 lead.  Salata went on to connect on the free throw for the four-point play increasing the lead to 54-52.
 
* Berks responded on its next possession to tie the game at 54-54 but Abington followed with a score of its own on the ensuing possession.  Senior Alex Podolski hit a jumper to break the tie.  Two possessions later Abington tacked on another basket to increase the lead to 58-54.  After a defensive stop, a foul by Berks led Salata to the free throw line with 1:18 to play.  Salata hit both attempts to give Abington a 60-54 lead.
 
* Another defensive stop by Abington forced Berks to foul with less than a minute to play.  Sophomore Lexuus Fasce split a pair of free throws to give Abington its biggest lead of the game at 61-54.
 
* A quick three-pointer by Berks' Matthew Gingerich made it a four-point game at 61-57 with :46 seconds remaining in the regulation.  Free throws down the final minute helped Abington hold off Berks as Salata converted 3-of-4 on his way to a 28-point performance.
 
* Abington trailed by as many as nine points early on in the first half when Berks held a 13-4 advantage at the 13:54 mark.  Abington flipped the script the rest of the half and outscored Berks, 24-14, to lead 28-27 at the half.  Senior Brian Randolph III drained a three-pointer to cap the scoring in the half with :29 seconds remaining.
 
Inside the Box Score

* Salata led all scorers with a game-high 28 points setting a new career-high in the process.  It marked his ninth 20-plus point scoring performance of the season.  Salata finished the night shooting 8-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-5 from deep range and a near-perfect 9-of-10 from the free throw line.  He also totaled six rebounds and three steals.
 
* Fasce finished the night in double-figures as he totaled 12 points (5-10 FG) to go along with a season-high eight rebounds. 
 
* Randolph added 11 points and filled the box score with eight rebounds and four assists.
 
* Podolski contributed seven points and six rebounds, while junior Jake Schalki grabbed seven rebounds with four points.
 
* For Berks, Darik Tannis-Harriet finished with 14 points (6-8 FG) to go along with six rebounds and three steals.  Andre Ballard (12) and Jeff Lorah (10) each scored in double-figures.
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 22nd meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 15-7 versus Berks in the all-time series and has won the last five matchups.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Mary's College in United East action.  Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
