Third Quarter Surge Lifts Abington Over Berks, 75-52

Abington, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball completed the season sweep over visiting Penn State Berks with a 75-52 victory in United East Conference (UEC) action on Tuesday night at the Abington Athletic Building on National Girls & Women in Sports Night.  Prior to the game, both teams gathered and recognized the accomplishments of female athletes to jump start Nation Girls & Women in Sports Day which begins on Wednesday.

How It Happened
 
* A 16-6 run to close out the final five minutes of the third quarter turned out to be the turning point in the game.  Abington led 46-40 at the 5:03 mark of the quarter and went on a quick 7-0 run that jumpstarted the rally.  Senior Angel Sanders scored nine of the team's 16 points during that span.
 
* Leading 62-46 entering the fourth quarter, Abington went on to open the fourth quarter with a 9-2 surge to increase its lead to 23 points.  A jumper by senior Isabella Vazquez made the score 71-48 with 4:19 to play. The Nittany Lions would lead by as many as 25 points in the final minute after a layup basket by junior Kankoun Sylla made it a 75-50 game.
 
* Abington opened the game on a 16-4 run, but Berks rallied the second half of the opening quarter to tie the game at 18-18.  The 14-2 rally by Berks covered a four-minute span.  Despite the comeback by Berks, Abington was able to take the lead by quarters end when Vazquez capped the scoring in the quarter with a jumper to give Abington a 20-18 lead heading into the second.
 
* Abington led by as many as nine points in the second quarter after a three-pointer by Sanders made the score 34-25 at the 4:57 mark.  Abington maintained its lead and entered the locker rooms at halftime with a 39-34 advantage.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sanders led all scorers with a season-high 25 points on 11-of-18 shooting from the field.  She also added eight rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
 
* Junior Camille Fleming registered her first double-double of the season with a season-high 15 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.  Fleming shot 7-of-11 from the field and also had a block and steal on defense.
 
* Senior Cassie Tavormina also had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds marking her third of the season and her second in as many games.  Tavormina totaled a pair of steals and had a block.
 
* Vazquez finished the game in double-figures with 11 points to go along with four rebounds and a team-high five assists.  She also blocked a pair of shots.

* For Berks, Hailey Miller led the team with 19 points and 10 rebounds to record a double-double.  Morgan Kline added 10 points and seven rebounds. 
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 22nd meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 13-9 versus Berks in the all-time series.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Friday, Feb. 3 as the Nittany Lions travel to face St. Mary's College in a United East contest.  Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
