Abington Holds Off Berks Late for 65-59 Victory

Reading, Pa. – The Penn State Abington women's basketball team collected its first United East Conference (UEC) victory of the season after holding off Penn State Berks, 65-59, on Friday evening at the Beaver Athletics and Wellness Center.

How It Happened
 
* Abington jumped out to a double-digit lead over the first 6:47 minutes of the game with a 16-5 advantage.  Five different players scored for the Nittany Lions during the opening surge. 
 
* Berks rallied and went on a 14-2 run over the next three minutes to grab its first lead of the game at 19-18.  However, Abington quickly responded with three straight baskets over the final :20 seconds of the quarter.  Senior Angela Sanders scored the first basket capped with a free throw, before sophomore Safara McIntyre recorded back-to-back steals resulting in layup scores.  The 7-0 run gave Abington a 25-19 lead by quarters end.
 
* The momentum carried over into the second quarter as Abington increased its lead back to double digits.  The Nittany Lions led by as many as 13 points when senior Cassie Tavormina knocked down a three-pointer to make the score 39-26 with 3:05 to play until halftime.  Abington would go on to lead 41-29 heading into the locker rooms at the half.
 
* Abington saw its lead swell to as many as 17 points late in the third quarter.  A layup basket by junior Camille Fleming increased the Nittany Lions' advantage to 52-35.  Berks would end the quarter with a 9-3 run to cut the deficit down to 11 points. 
 
* In the fourth quarter Berks came within six points of the lead and each time Abington answered to keep the home team at bay.  The latter coming with 1:17 to play in regulation when Berks' Morgan Kline split a pair of free throws to make the score 62-56.  On the following possession Sanders hit the front end of two free throws to increase the lead back to seven points.  On Abington's final possession, a steal by McIntyre lead to a layup score by freshman Sofia Granados that made the score 65-56 with :23 seconds to play.  Berks followed with a three-pointer with :17 seconds left before Abington ran out the clock.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Sanders recorded her fifth double-double of the season and the 16th of her career after scoring a game-high 17 points and grabbing a team-high 14 rebounds. 
 
* McIntyre, in her first game of the season, made an immediate impact defensively as she registered a school record 15 steals.  She also finished the game with 11 points to record a double-double.  Her 15 steals are fourth most in NCAA Division III history and the most in a game since Damaris Rodriguez of New Jersey City totaled 16 steals in a game against Saint Elizabeth in 2021.
 
* Tavormina also scored in double-figures as she totaled 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. 
 
* Senior Isabella Vazquez added eight points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals.
 
* As a team, Abington finished with 26 steals setting a new program record breaking the previous mark of 24 set last season against Berks in the Athletic Building.
 
* For Berks, Hailey Miller recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Morgan Kline grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with six points. 
 
All-Time Series
Tonight marked the 21st meeting between Abington and Berks since the start of the 2011-12 season.  Abington, winners of three straight in the series, is now 12-9 versus Berks all-time.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action tomorrow as the Nittany Lions remain on the road to face Penn State Harrisburg in United East action.  Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
