Abington Stuns Harrisburg, 61-52

Middletown, Pa. – The Penn State Abington men's basketball team earned its first-ever victory at Penn State Harrisburg by downing the two-time reigning United East Conference (UEC) champions, 61-52, on Saturday afternoon at the Capital Union Building.  The win marked Abington's first triumph over Harrisburg in nearly a decade.  The last time the Nittany Lions defeated Harrisburg was on Jan. 27, 2013 with a 113-105 victory at the Athletic Building.

How It Happened
 
* In a low-scoring first half, Abington led by as many as eight points midway through the half.  Leading 8-7 at the 12:23 mark, Abington went on a quick 7-0 run to grab a 15-7 advantage.  Over the next seven-plus minutes Harrisburg used an 11-3 run of its own to tie the game at 18-18 with 2:45 to play until halftime.
 
* Harrisburg broke the tie with a three-pointer by Isaiah Eggleston at the two-minute mark before Abington responded with a three from senior Alex Salata III on its next possession to tie the game at 21-21.  Two possessions later Harrisburg once again broke the tie with a layup basket by Chase Robinson.  In the final seconds of the half Salata split a pair of free throws to make it a 23-22 game heading into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
* In the second half both teams exchanged leads 11 times with the final lead change taking place with just under 10 minutes to play.  Abington trailed 38-37 and a three-point play by senior Brian Randolph III jumped started a 9-0 run for the Nittany Lions.  Abington led 46-38, its largest lead since the first half, with 5:58 to play after sophomore Darrion Harris capped the run with a free throw.  
 
* Abington would eventually increase its lead to double-figures as it swelled to as many as 12 points after a three-pointer by Salata.  The deep range shot made the score 53-41 with 3:47 left on the clock.
 
* Harrisburg cut the deficit down to six points at 58-52 with 1:16 to play but free throws in the final minute secured the victory for Abington.  The Abington defense held Harrisburg to 0-of-3 shooting from the field in its final three possessions.
 
Inside the Box Score
 
* Salata led all scorers with 20 points marking his third straight 20-plus point performance.  He shot 6-of-12 from the field, including 4-of-8 from deep range. 
 
* Randolph added 13 points and seven rebounds to go along with four steals on defense, while Harris finished with 12 points.
 
* Junior Jake Schalki grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds setting a new season-high.  He also tallied nine points and had three assists.
 
* Senior Alex Podolski contributed seven points and seven rebounds.
 
* For Harrisburg, Eggleston finished with 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.  Lance Douglas recorded a team-high 10 rebounds.
 
Streaking Lions
Abington has won four straight games and are now 10-3 overall marking its best start in the program's Division III era since going 8-4 to start the 2013-14 campaign.  It's also just the second time that Abington has started conference play 4-0 since.  The previous time was in the 2018-19 season. 
 
All-Time Series
Today marked the 10th meeting between Abington and Harrisburg in the program's Division III era which began with the 2011-12 season.  Abington is now 2-8 versus Harrisburg in that span.  The win marked the Nittany Lions first-ever at Harrisburg and the first since Jan. 27, 2013.
 
Next Up
Abington returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 11 as the Nittany Lions return home to host Lancaster Bible College in United East action.  Tip-off from the Athletic Building is set for 7 p.m.
